Dangerous Damsel – Victor Radiant

Just as I was thinking about how I wanted to deal with this massive metal robot, I heard Technocrat grunt. “Finally!” The mecha suddenly reared back, its forelimbs lifting high. The sudden movement sent me flying off, and I twisted my body desperately in the air. I landed on all fours, grunting as a few of my long bones splintered on the impact. “I could teach you how to land better,” Cat purred as she walked toward me, hips swaying. Despite her teasing, she kept her head turned toward the mecha-beast, her sharp brown eyes focused above her cat-whisker mask.
I lifted myself off the ground and stretched my back with a grimace. “I’d be happy to take you up on that offer if you ever came to any of our training sessions. Where’s Jen?” Cat pointed to the far corner of the warehouse, where Jen sat in shadow, her hand over her chest, breathing hard. “She’s right, you know.
I was doing a little groundwork outside while you waltzed right in, and some of his goons are setting up a perimeter. I bet they’re going to call in some big guns soon. Like that one isn’t big enough.” She nodded at the robot grappling with Marilyn. Despite her strength and endurance, Marilyn was being overwhelmed by her opponent.
Its long tail whipped violently around, the segmented metal parts cracking with electricity as they forced her back. The machine gun continued to focus on her face, this time aiming carefully to conserve ammunition while forcing her to continue covering her face. This allowed the robot to draw one arm back and land a hard blow against Marilyn’s left shoulder, drawing out a harsh roar of pain. She fell onto her back, her face peppered with bullets as the robot slammed her to the ground.
I immediately began to run toward her, but Cat reached out to hold me back. “You take care of Jen.

Cat attempted to fill the silence, but her attempts at domestic bliss quickly stopped after I caught her trying to put my cast iron in the dishwasher. “Sorry.” She leaned against the counter as she watched me return the pan to the sink.
“I’ve never been good at this kinda stuff.” Cat ran her hands down her slim body. “But I do look pretty good in an apron, right?” I raised one eyebrow sharply at her. “I know you miss Marilyn, but you don’t have to try to replace her. I can handle the housework just fine. I know you’re not used to doing chores.” She stuck out her tongue and kicked me in the leg.
“I try to be nice, and this is the thanks I get?” She crossed her arms over her chest, then sighed. “All right, yeah, fine, I miss her a little. Now that we’re part of a squad, or whatever you call it, I feel like I should be helping out more.” “We’re not technically in a league yet,” I corrected her. “Lots of red tape to go through first. But I’ll be sure to let her know that you feel lost without her.”
Cat kicked me again, harder this time, then tossed her black hair back with a soft harrumph. “You better not! It’s just, you know, now that I’m trying to take my Super stuff more seriously, it’d be nice to have something to do.” I began to gently soap the well-seasoned bottom of my pan. “Don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll have a lot to think about once they come back.
If you’re really itching for work, I can probably find some side jobs for you to handle.” Her face immediately scrunched up in disgust. “Nah, that already sounds too boring. I’d rather just wait.” I rolled my eyes. “So you like the idea of getting to work, but not so much the actual doing, is that it?”
