Deadly Tides Marthas Vineyard Murders 5 – Raemi A Ray

“Not all private security is up to the standard of Greyscale. Some of those contractors are no better than mercenaries.” “You think whoever killed Nik was in private security, the military, or a cage fighter?” Kyra asked, sitting up. Tarek spun his beer glass on its coaster. Gully smiled, but he rubbed it away with the back of his hand so quickly, Kyra could have been mistaken.
“I’m just thinking things through.” Tar turned to Kyra. “Nik Kota wasn’t a small guy. It would have been difficult for Hattie to overpower him.” Nik had been a CrossFitter, and Kyra had seen firsthand their display of strength. “You don’t think she could have killed him?” “Not on her own, no.” Tarek’s phone buzzed, and he glanced at the screen.
“I have to take this. Gul, can I get a burger?” “Right up.” When Tarek was out of sight, Gully pulled one of his towels out and wiped down the shiny bar. “He’s doing better.” It wasn’t a question. “This is good. Get him working.” He leaned down, resting his forearms on the bar top so he was at eye level with Kyra. “The last time he was hurt on the job, after he was stabbed, he was in a bad place.”
Kyra’s breath hitched. Tarek had nearly died when a routine drug bust went wrong. “He wasn’t as bad as he’s been this time, but he wasn’t himself for a long while. It wasn’t until he was assigned to investigate a mass grave that he finally worked himself out of his funk. I’m not suggesting you commit a massacre. Not unless you want to.” It may have been a joke, but neither of them cracked a smile.
Gully pulled back and tapped the bar. “Get his brain busy, Kyra. It helps.” She pressed her lips together in a tight line. She wasn’t at all certain she was up for the task. “I’ll try.” Gully straightened to his full, imposing height. He turned to the digital ordering display.

Low tones of male voices, one soft and melodic, the other louder, huskier, and cheerier, drifted up the stairs from the kitchen below, but she couldn’t make out their words. A rumbling sound drowned out their voices, or they stopped talking. “Shit.” She’d hoped to have been out of the house before they came home.
