I rather wished I hadn’t said that. It was ill-advised. ‘They’re such an ill-assorted pair,’ I added hastily. The woman was looking self-important now. ‘In that case, citizen, we’ll willingly keep guard. Don’t argue, husband. Forgive him, citizen. We’ve been struggling now for moons. Generally, we move from town to town, and he sells and sharpens knives.

Makes us a good living, on the whole. But we were in Glevum when contagion struck, and since then we have been welcome nowhere else. We’ve had to trade our stock for food, and there’s no money to replace it with. Then we heard the plague was waning, and were going to try again, though it’s not easy with a single ox.

If we’re forced to eat that, we shall have to sell the cart, which means we lose our home. We’ve got so desperate we’re thinking that one of the children might make a slave, perhaps – and we could use the price to feed the rest of us.’ She broke off suddenly. ‘I’m sorry, citizen. You don’t want to hear all this …’ ‘On the contrary,’ I said.

‘You confirm my view of you. I believe you can be trusted, and I will leave you here. But whatever you have hidden in those baskets, gentlemen, you will replace them now.’ The husband nodded sullenly. ‘I suppose we have no choice. I knew there’d be trouble, wife. I told you so …’ He was still muttering as I walked back to the gig. OceanofPDF.com Marcus was waiting, looking rather sour.

‘What took you such a time?’ He gestured me to join him on the seat again. The page scrambled down to help me, but I stood my ground. ‘Excellence, I was persuading them to testify for you,’ I replied. ‘I think you need to speak to them yourself.’ ‘What for? They have agreed, I hope! Even if they’re travellers, not from this area, they must realise I’m a man of rank.’ ‘Of course.

Though they needed persuasion. They’re wary of dealing with the authorities. But not only have they agreed to speak for you, they’ve promised to guard the bodies until someone comes for them. For a small consideration, naturally.’ I saw his disapproving look. ‘You wouldn’t wish to have it said that Appius Limpnus was slung into the plague-pit when you might have prevented it.’ ‘There’ll have to be a proper funeral for him,’ Marcus fretted. ‘At the curia’s expense. He has no living relatives, as far as I’m aware, but – given who he is, or was – it can’t be left to household slaves, or to a funeral guild, supposing he belonged to one.’
