Dementia – Justin Boote (1)

There had been an aura about her, a presence, that he didn’t care for at all. He felt terrible for leaving his old friend to fend for himself and his son, but this was well beyond his capabilities. From the second he walked into the place, he had an overwhelming sensation of impending doom, that at any second some great catastrophe was about to occur. And the mother would be at the epicentre of it all. He couldn’t imagine the terror the man must be feeling right now, for his son’s safety, especially after the tragic loss of his wife and now this.
Seeing her standing over his son’s cot holding a pair of scissors, the horrors running through the man’s mind, the possibilities, the what if’s. Like Julian he had tried to consider all mental illnesses associated with the elderly as well, but nothing came even close to explaining how an elderly lady could achieve such feats as running up and down the stairs without causing serious harm. Her heart must have been on the verge of collapsing on her, let alone her hip. And when he had mentioned Julian’s birth, that flinch, that twitch on her features, suggested a connection, yet one he couldn’t begin to understand.
Her focus seemed to be the toddler, Isaak, yet what the poor kid could possibly have done wrong he had no idea, only that he sensed a great evil emanating from the woman; a corruption oozing from her pores that had no place here, much less an old lady. It was something he had seen before, a long time ago, and which resulted in him working for the church now. He had sensed that same menace as he saw in Edna but on this occasion he had only been twelve- years-old.
The memory was sketchy, his brain trying its utmost to rid the tumour from his memories but it still lingered nonetheless. He remembered visiting his cousin’s house with his parents and being made to sit by himself on the sofa, while the rest of the family spoke in hushed tones in the kitchen, terror and uncertainty carved onto their features.
They’d all then gone upstairs to where his cousin, Shane, was apparently confined to bed, unwell. Bangs and yells soon ensued, a terrible rocking of something like the bed being shaken back and forth, legs drumming on the floor causing the lightbulb above Michael to swing back and forth and almost smash against the ceiling.

“Same as before, Terry. No change whatsoever. She just sits there staring straight ahead in her own little world.” “Damn. I was really hoping there might be improvements today.” Agatha had been in her own little world for over three weeks now, ever since the inmate, Tina Wilcox, from Northgate had miraculously appeared against the odds. Miraculously, because her soul should have been saved. Terry had seen to it himself. And now this. His wife, the woman that had saved him from a thousand wrong- doings, a thousand moments of self-doubt was sat here at Northgate Hospital for the Mentally Impaired in a vegetative state, incommunicative, unresponsive, and no one knew for how long, if ever, she may remain this way.
Terry needed her to leave that little world behind right now. He needed her in his, on a quest he couldn’t manage alone. Not without his sidekick, his partner, his reason to be. He had come close so many times already, believed himself to be so close even now, yet without her mental spirit and guidance, he would fail. Both himself, his wife, and his little sister, Katie.
