Time: 06:00 “Today,” Hari said, “is the most obscene of all days. An abhorrent day that corrupts young minds.” “True Hari bhau,” Ganesh said, “the West corrupts our young.” There was a pause. “But what are you talking about in particular?” “Valentine’s Day,” Hari said grimly, “the ‘let’s celebrate obscenity’ day. The ‘let’s teach the youngsters immoral things’ day.” “Correct, Hari bhau,” Ganesh moved his head in agreement. “How dare these unmarried youngsters flaunt their love out in the open? Don’t they have any shame? They will soon start having sex outdoors if not stopped now.

The bloody West and their frivolities!” Hari shouted. Ganesh had not opened his father’s garage for the day. Two of Hari’s trusted aides, Prahlad and Shakti, sat with Hari and Ganesh across a makeshift table in the garage. The four young men sat with ease, their legs sprawled. Outside, the air was bereft of voices. The coo of a restless koel could be heard periodically.

A cool breeze sometimes made her way in through the open garage door providing relief from the heat. Hari took a quick look at his Twitter account: Liberal_feminists: Valentine’s Day is a celebration of commercialisation. Liberal_feminists: Valentine’s Day is a celebration of only one kind of love—the love between a man and a woman. Liberal_feminists: For this reason, we deride the day. “Saala! We and these so-called liberal feminists are on the same page today,” he laughed.

The others did not understand and looked at him blankly. “We must stop this corruption. Assemble into groups and visit all college campuses. Take lathis. Stop the young from celebrating this vile day,” Hari ordered his goons. “Order flower shops to stop selling roses to the young. They must not encourage this obscenity.” “Rocking, Hari bhau!” Prahlad said. Young men without jobs were eager to show off their prowess by bullying young lovers with the help of lathis. After giving them the instructions, the meeting concluded, and Hari left for work.

Dharma_Sanstha: Anyone who celebrates Valentine’s Day will get a lathi on their bum. Right_Wing_Hindu: Give a red rose and get a red bum in return. Holy_man: Why celebrate love before marriage? Get married first. Indian_parent: I applaud the Dharma Sanstha for showing youngsters the right path. Bravo!

Time: 15:00 Padded leg-holders protruded from a stainless-steel bed covered with a thin rexine mattress. A black wire sprawled from the bed onto the grey tiled floor. A poky toilet with the door ajar released a hint of dehydrated urine into the windowless room. In contrast, the doctor exuded efficiency through her crisp cotton sari. She sat behind a desk, facing Aparna.
