She could feel his pulse point hammering alongside hers. Much like he had earlier, Aphrodite blushed like he had grabbed her and snogged her senseless in the middle of his family’s foyer. The simple act of holding hands shouldn’t be allowed to be so stimulating. Aphrodite felt the warmth spreading from where their skin was making contact to the rest of her arm until it went numb, to her chest until it ached, to her head until it fogged. “Well done, Princess.” The whispered endorsement undid her.

Aphrodite felt moisture in her knickers, a heat pooling low in her belly as she fought tooth and nail to control her reactions. Her body seemed to have a mind of its own, and when this man was around, said mind turned to mush. Taking the rest of her along with it. “I think I just lost a decade off my life.”

Aphrodite whispered back, and squeezed the hand she was still holding onto like a lifeline. “You passed the first test. Keep looking ahead.” She wanted to tell him to let go. She wanted him to hold on tighter. She wanted to go back in time and never accept this invitation. She wanted to ask him to take her to his room and talk about this. Before she could even begin to articulate any of this, Persephone was thrusting a box of mistletoe gingerbread cookies at them, and they had to let go as they scrambled not to drop it.

The ghost of his touch didn’t fade for the entirety of the evening. OceanofPDF.com phrodite had never felt luckier that she was a generally social person. She didn’t think any introverted version of herself could have lasted over an hour at the Annual Olympian Christmas Bake Sale. Yes, that was the actual name. Everywhere she looked there were people- singing carols, catching up with their friends, drinking hot apple cider, and of course buying baked goods.

The crowd was loud and merry, ranging from elderly to toddlers on their parents’ hips, and Aphrodite had to concentrate on focusing just on one person at the time instead of trying to take in everyone at once. She was rubbing her temples with mitten-covered hands, trying to stave off a headache induced by several uninterrupted hours of talking about cardamon buns and puddings, when a large shadow appeared beside her.

It’s two days before Christmas, and she’s weighed down by more exhaustion than a person ought to be allowed to feel during the most wonderful time of the year (although everything about that is debatable). She already has forty-four tragically unread and consequently unanswered emails clogging up her inbox despite doing her usual thorough check the night before, her desk is covered in spreadsheets and her iPad is balanced on her lap simply because there’s nowhere else to place it, so the last thing Hera needs is knocking on the door.

The sound of knocking usually means there are knuckles doing the knocking, and unless there are disembodied hands running around the office of Mythos Inc, (in which case Hera is just going to remind them she’s head of HR and not pest control) that signifies the presence of a whole person behind that door. “Come in!”

Hera calls out, even though she really doesn’t want to. She takes great pains to arrange both her tone of voice and facial expression into something professional that’s not going to scare whoever it is away.
