I could live with him not trusting my guys. But did he still trust me? I turned to him, camouflaged camera and battery pack still in hand. The sun was coming up, the daylight thin and bleak, and he was searching our surroundings as vigilantly as a trained soldier. His expression was hard to read, which was nothing new for Leo. “Hey.” I touched his waist.

“You’re still with me, right?” He looked up at me, and a faint smile broke through. “Why wouldn’t I be?” “I don’t know.” I brushed a few strands of hair off his forehead and tucked them under his cover. “Just…everyone’s getting twitchy and paranoid.” “We’re in the middle of nowhere and the mafia probably found us. Of course we’re twitchy and paranoid.” He slid a hand up the front of my buttoned blouse and curved it behind my neck. “But if I wasn’t still with you, I wouldn’t be out here in the woods with you and that.”

He tapped a fingernail on the rifle slung over my shoulder. “And I sure as hell wouldn’t have slept next to you.” I couldn’t help shivering. We’d done more than sleep last night. It hadn’t seemed like the time—did it ever, when it came to us?—but we’d needed the break from all the insanity and fear, and sex was the best escape either of us could think of. I wondered if Leo and I would ever know a time when sex happened just because we wanted it to, not because we were seizing a frantic opportunity that could very well be our last.

We both cleared our throats and broke eye contact. “We should get these set up,” he said. “Yeah. We—” I stiffened. A low hum tickled the edges of my senses. I lifted my gaze, searching the slowly brightening sky and the spaces between evergreen branches for the telltale movement of a drone. The hum came closer, though, and resolved itself into the distinct sound of a car engine.

Beside me, Leo had straightened too, and we both stood stone still, searching and listening like alarmed prairie dogs. The distant engine whined with exertion. Not just from climbing the steep mountain—it was climbing fast. Then tires squealed. I touched the button on my earpiece, “Incoming vehicle. High rate of speed.” “How far?” Sarge asked. “Not sure. It’s coming up from the south and—” The first volley of gunfire sent Leo and me to the deck.

With the mob’s tentacles embedded in everything from local law enforcement to federal agencies, the guys are running low on allies.

Rich has one ace up his sleeve—the men who had his back in warzones during his time in the Marines. When he sends out a distress call, the cavalry comes running. Heavily armed, highly trained, and fully provisioned, they hunker down in a buddy’s missile silo, ready to make a stand against whatever the Grimaldi family sends after Rich and Leo. Leo isn’t so sure about the Marines, though. He trusts Rich, but something isn’t right, and he’s not a gambling man when his life is on the line.

The Marines aren’t so sure they trust him, either, and Rich suddenly finds himself in a standoff between the men he’s bled with and the man he’s quickly falling for. Now they’re running out of time to either find the turncoat among them or get on the same side. Because the Grimaldi family is coming, and this time they’re bringing out the big guns.
