In its place, I saw the beginnings of something harder, something that might one day match the strength required to survive in my world. OceanofPDF.com Chapter Ten he penthouse was silent when we finally returned, the digital clock on the microwave glowing 3:17 AM in accusatory green digits. I tossed my keys onto the kitchen counter with more force than necessary, making the clatter echo in the pristine space.

Exhaustion pulled at my muscles, but my mind remained sharp, alert with the lingering adrenaline of the night’s events. I hadn’t slept in nearly twenty-four hours. Neither had Kayla, whose face showed the strain of everything she’d witnessed, yet her eyes remained clear, focused. She followed me through the darkened living room toward the bedrooms, her footsteps soft on the polished concrete floors. I hadn’t meant to lead her to my room, but somehow that’s where we ended up, standing in the doorway, the tension between us pulled taut like piano wire.

I shrugged off my jacket and draped it over a chair, watching her from the corner of my eye. She hadn’t moved from the threshold, as if crossing into my personal space required an invitation or courage she hadn’t yet summoned. The events at the safe-house had changed something between us. The careful distance she’d maintained since the gala had collapsed, replaced by a wary curiosity that seemed equally dangerous. “You should get some sleep,” I said, the words sounding hollow even to my own ears. “It’s been a long night.”

She remained where she was, studying me with an intensity that made me uncomfortably aware of every move I made. “Is that what you do? Just go to sleep after something like this?” I removed my gun and placed it carefully on the nightstand. “Sometimes. Sometimes I drink. Sometimes I work out until I can’t think anymore.” I turned to face her fully.

“What do you want, Kayla? Why are you still standing there?” “I don’t know.” Her honesty surprised me. “I just… I don’t want to be alone right now.”

I set the phone down and moved to the shower. Whatever Lordes wanted to discuss, I’d face it clean-shaven and dressed to impress. Appearances mattered in the family. Especially when your life might hang in the balance. I chose my darkest suit, a charcoal Armani that cost me a grip. The crimson necktie was a calculated choice.
