“Come.” They strode together through the front garden and up the broad stone steps to the front door. These days, with melders aware of imminent attack, every melder was accountable for the fate of his or her Lynkyn forest. But a primer should be present to protect his forest. His having had a valid excuse for being away didn’t relieve his guilt. He took her arm. “Wait a moment, Mylia.

I’ve something to say.” She looked up at him, her brown eyes curious and pensive. “I’m sorry, more than I can say, for not encouraging you more. If I’d shown my trust in you sooner, you would have known it was safe to tell me what you were doing.” His hand drifted down her arm and clasped her hand.

He licked his lips and leaned toward her. “Can you forgive me for not believing you?” “Do you forgive me?” “I tried very hard to hate you. I couldn’t make it stick.” He stared at her fingers. Such delicate hands. They curled around his own. Her expression grew affectionate, and he drew closer. A portly man opened the doors, swinging them out of view and revealing the grand foyer.

“Welcome, Primer Tovlian, Melder Bovee.” He should have held her in the forest for his apology. Before the butler could step aside and wave them in, a woman’s voice interceded. “I’ll direct our guests from here, Colve.” Colve bowed out of the way, disappearing through a doorway to their left. Normally, they wouldn’t meet the Montomoro host this early and not at the front door of the manor.

Jounnar eyed Lady Alisa and her smile directed at Mylia. Something had changed in the short time he had been with Moro altering the bone binding. The verdict, of course. “I am Alisa, the lady of the manor. Primer Tovlian, you know where your room is. I will guide your friend to hers.” Dismissed, he swallowed his disappointment. Perhaps he could give Mylia a tour later and find their new equilibrium with each other before they set out for the rendezvous with the fleet fire.

Even knowing they were riding into danger didn’t reduce the exhilaration that came with his freedom to trust in Mylia. They had a couple of days before they would have to leave the Montomoro estate and reestablish her reliance as a spy for the Caster Council, and he had wasted enough on suspicion and betrayal.

Her belted bodice of bright white flashed under a cascade of straight black hair. Her pleasant tone and attention seemed only for Mylia. “Yes,” Mylia sought Jounnar’s reaction.

The scent of well-mulched soil and Nahlyn sweetness drifted around him. One more young Nahlyn safely planted far from caster traffic.

He turned his face into the light wind and let it blow his hair away from his face, drying the beads of sweat over his brow. He dusted his hands off and stood, giving his knees a swipe before looking around. His Nahlyn nursery wrapped around a low green hillock, a few of the saplings as tall as himself. Their gentle whispers skipped across his skin, reminding him of the days when his world was peaceful and full of hope and the future.

How long had it been since his world burned? Eleven years. He was thirty-one and felt ancient. Maybe this time, he’d rebuild what he’d lost. The young sentient trees were content with the site he had chosen for them. The individual voices of the impressionable saplings dribbled like confetti on the breeze.

Tomorrow, he’d prod them into growth, but today, he had other work to do. Soon the cadre he’d pulled together from across Rigaria would arrive. They needed shelter and supplies.
