Duplicity And Deceit – Colin Rowland (1)

He impressed her as a kind, caring person, and one who felt insulted that those highwaymen had accosted them on the road that ran alongside his estate. And the compassion he showed when hearing the incident described was genuine, she was confident. She refused to believe Mr. Darcy was the criminal who had robbed them. To entertain such an idea went against her every instinct regarding the man, and she refused to give in to foolish suspicions. With a final stoke of the brush through her hair, Elizabeth took her shawl from the chair and went downstairs to meet an increasingly impatient Jane who, along with Mrs. Bennet, waited in the entrance for her.
“Finally,” remarked Jane when Elizabeth stopped beside her. “I feared you were never going to finish.” “If not for your interruption, I would have been here first,” replied Elizabeth to no one, as Jane and Mrs. Bennet were on their way to the carriage. When they had seated themselves, the coach left for the short ride to Meryton, whose assembly hall was nearly empty as they pulled up to the front.
“We seem to be early,” said she, to which Jane did not respond, as she looked around the property, as if searching for someone. “Mrs. Bennet,” came a familiar voice, accompanied by Mr. Bingley’s appearance at the entrance. Behind him, Mr. Darcy looked ill at ease, a marked difference from his friend’s excited smile.
“We are glad to see you so early. Miss Bennet, Miss Elizabeth, it is so good to see you as well. Darcy was afraid we had arrived too early. He wanted to wait another hour, to avoid having to pay his respects to so many strangers.” “They do not need a recitation of my reasons for wanting to delay our arrival,” responded Darcy, wearing a smile that looked to Elizabeth more forced than genuine.
“I do not see Miss Bingley,” remarked Elizabeth, scanning the entrance and the open yard where the carriages pulled in to deliver their passengers. “Is she inside?” “She stayed home tonight with a headache,” replied Bingley, although his manner suggested another reason might be more truthful, as he did not look at her directly. “Pass along our best wishes for her recovery. We hope the problem is not too severe,” said Elizabeth in commiseration. “That kind of pain can be debilitating.
I can understand her reticence to attend an evening such as this, where the noise could make things worse.” Bingley’s smile of gratitude stretched from ear to ear. “Thank you, Miss Elizabeth, I will convey your message to Caroline, and to Mrs. Hurst, who stayed behind to tend to her sister.” “It is good you came so early,” said Jane.

Without help from many people, what might be a wonderful tale is only that. My editor, Kay Springsteen, put her critical eye to good use finding plot holes, anachronisms, punctuation, and narrative, among other things. Your assistance improved the composition immensely. I relied on my superb beta readers for their unbiased opinions and criticisms. They identified parts that needed improvement and pointed to other areas that either did not work or needed rewriting. Together we raised the quality of my story, and you have my profound gratitude.
Thank you, Karana, Dianne, Joan, and Angela. Your criticisms and suggestions raised the bar on my story. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you to those who have chosen to read my stories. Your support and feedback are valued. Criticism is always welcome, especially of the constructive variety. Please take the time to email me with your thoughts, suggestions and ideas. I look forward to receiving your messages and read all of them. I reply to a good many of them as well.
