True, I’d had a moment with James, a mark, but the other two and I weren’t on any sort of an intimate basis. And even James and I were not living as I believed other mates did. Mostly because of my hesitation about the others. I knew they were a package deal, and in making love and mating with James before deciding whether I was ready to be with all of them, I might have crossed a line.

Been unfair to them. They were helping me with everything, even building a house and wanting me to have a lot of say in it, but I wasn’t ready to give up my autonomy, to let males make decisions for me again. Despite the fact that didn’t even make sense to me. My chest heaved under the fluffy robe like some sort of romance heroine, though, because despite my anger that Heath had made that call without so much as checking with me, I was drawn to this male.

I wanted to have a say in my life, and as I looked up at the alpha, the slightly nerdy, generally calm male who always seemed in control, I recognized something I hadn’t when I walked into the room. The bath I’d taken to try to relax and think had been interrupted by the raised voice of the one I’d never expected to hear lose control.

Everyone relied on him to keep things running smoothly and always know the right thing to do. Even I had begun to treat him as that person. But when he made the call to whoever he’d reached—most likely Clinton—that cool, calm alpha lost it for a moment. Loudly enough, I’d scrambled out of the tub and nearly fallen on my ass in my rush to find out what was happening. Was someone here? I only heard one voice, but was it ever loud. And then, skidding into the kitchen to find him standing at the counter and shouting into the phone?

Wow. Would he be offended if I told him it was very sexy? But also…not his right. We were not mated. So I should be far more offended than excited. How did I ever get so screwed up? I was a mom and as such needed to be clearheaded and not panting after the professor.

Who, to be fair, had shifted right back into his normal mode as soon as he hung up the phone and saw me. And saying I was free to go without pointing out that I did have a mating bond with James was reassuring. “I don’t want to go anywhere.” I tucked my hands in the robe pocket, opening and closing my fists, just to let off a little of the energy that had me vibrating.
