“I’m sorry things changed between you and your brother because of me. I promise, I never wanted to make things weird. If I could—” She cut me off, her voice rising again. “Why couldn’t you just wait? He could’ve done things the right way. Brought you home, introduced you, had a proper wedding! But you rushed him—” This time, I cut her off, steady but firm. “Badr was forced into marrying me, but not by me.”

My throat tightened, but I pushed through. “I admit, I should’ve fought harder when my grandfather suggested it. But I’m only human. We’re all selfish sometimes. My choices were to marry a man twice my age or marry Badr—someone I already knew. Allah gave me a way out, and I took it. I didn’t plan for this to happen, but if I had the chance again, I’d still make the same choice.” Her glare faltered.

She blinked, lips parting as if to speak, but no words came. The anger in her posture wavered, her arms loosening ever so slightly at her sides. I stood, walking toward her until I was directly in front of her. My voice softened. “I’m sorry, Hana. For the way things have been with you and Badr. He doesn’t like it either, but we can make it easier for him…

and for ourselves. Even if we can’t be close, we can at least be civil.” Her frown lingered, but her shoulders slumped. A sigh slipped out of her. “I didn’t mean to make you cry,” she murmured, voice smaller now. I rubbed the back of my neck, smiling sheepishly. “I know. I just… So much happened the past few days, so much changed, I got overwhelmed. Your family is so beautiful, and I wanted to be part of it.

But then I realized maybe I’d never be accepted, and it hurt. That’s why I broke down.” Hana’s brows pinched. She lifted her gaze to mine, softer this time. “Your family sounds mean,” she said bluntly. “I can’t imagine what that must be like.” “It’s complicated,” I whispered.

The teacher kept talking, a steady stream of words that stopped meaning anything the moment they reached me. I hardly got two hours in last night. There was an itch in my skull that said just one more, just one more. I tried to focus, but without it I couldn’t, and that thought sat on my chest like a stone. I have always been an A student, but without that edge, I would fail. I can’t afford to fail. My hand went into my bag.

I felt the cool shape of the pill and felt the floor of my resolve set itself around it. Then a voice stopped me. I sat up straight, as if posture could sharpen hearing. Instead my vision sharpened. My eyes landed on one bright thing in a room of gray: orange, so clean it looked lit from inside. A dress, a woman in an orange dress and a cream hijab. She was the only color that belonged where it was, like a little sun in a dim classroom.

I wanted to see her face, but she sat in front of me, turned away.
