Just a little cuddle,’ grinned Beau. ‘You not my dad. Jimmy is.’ When his daughter ran over to Bobby and clung to his right leg, Beau stood up. He felt sad, hurt, humiliated and stupid. Having been disappointed earlier that Sonny wasn’t with Bobby, Brett felt chuffed when Sonny turned up late wearing beige safari shorts, work boots and a plain black T-shirt.

He’d been working and Brett secretly thought how hot he looked. So manly, especially in those tatty old brown steel-toecap boots. Deciding to play it cool, Brett stayed seated. He and Sonny had been getting along great, meeting up regularly, until Brett had admitted to him that he was gay. Sonny had opened up to him first.

He’d admitted his marriage was a sham, he had never loved Mary-Ann and had only got with her in the first place as she was pregnant and that was what was expected of him by his family and community. But then he’d gone cold on him. Sonny sat on the chair next to Brett. ‘Sorry I’ve been quiet. I’ve had a lot on, at work and stuff.’ ‘No worries. You never repeated what I told you, did you?’ ‘Course not. I’d never do that.

I told you stuff too,’ Sonny replied assuringly. ‘Good. Gramps would go apeshit if he ever found out. I don’t need the grief.’ ‘I get that. Where is he today?’ ‘Spain. He’s back on Monday, I think.’ ‘Oh right. D’ya fancy going out again soon? I’m cool if you wanna go to one of them gay bars you told me about. As long as it ain’t local. Things like that don’t bother me and I’ve never been to one before, so thought we might have a laugh.’

Brett was surprised, yet pleased. He’d always known deep down that Sonny was the same as him.
