Fatal Risk – Jane Blythe

One moment of distraction was all it would take for the Mikhailovs to get her. “Oh, yes, sorry, I’m fine. I just hurt my leg and it chose right now to give up on me.” “Here, let me help.” A large hand cupped her elbow and gently helped her onto her feet. Instead of pulling away once she was standing, it lingered, the heat of it seeping into her chilled body, and for a moment Julia wished she had someone who cared about her at her side.
She had plenty of friends, people she loved and cared about, but right now, she had no one who would truly miss her if she was gone. No one who would call the cops because she’d disappeared, no one who would fight for her to be found, no one who would grieve her loss for very long. Because she was away working a story more than she was home, her friends were used to her not being an active part of their lives. For the first time ever, she wished she’d put down roots.
Why did roots make her think of Domino? The man had betrayed her. She had to stop thinking of him as someone she cared about. He wasn’t. He was her enemy, and not seeing him as such could lead to her downfall. “Thanks for your help,” she said, shooting the man with the scar a polite smile as she tried to move out of his grip.
If he thought helping her meant she’d say yes to a date he was sorely mistaken. Right now, she had much bigger fish to fry than worrying about her love life. It was her love life that was part of the problem. Instead of loosening, the man’s grip on her elbow tightened and he leaned in, provoking a stab of fear inside her. “Try anything stupid, and I’ll start shooting innocent bystanders.” To prove his point, she felt something cold press against her side. “I know a woman like you wouldn’t want innocent lives on her conscience.”
“Who are you?” “I’m your worst nightmare, moya dorogava.” She knew those words. My dear. In Russian. Which meant the man with the scar was one of Mikhailovs. “Catching on there I see. You have been a thorn in our side for too long, but one that is about to be removed. You will walk with me to the car and get in without making a scene.
If you do not, I will start shooting. In case you need any additional motivation, I will start with the children.” His head inclined to where a couple of mothers were walking with their kids, two strollers, and three preschoolers. There was no other option.

“We’ve got eyes on us.” Great. Just great. Damn, he hated this place. Not the market specifically but the country they were in. Every time they came here something went wrong. Dominick “Domino” Tanner would be perfectly happy never to set foot in Somalia again. Not even four months ago, he and his team had been captured, held for two weeks, and tortured before finally being rescued.
Then only weeks after that, they’d been back in this hellhole rescuing a teammate’s woman who had been abducted and tortured. In his mind, death and pain ruled this country, and he couldn’t wait to get out of it. “Domino, on your five o’clock,” Luca “Bear” Jackson—Prey Security’s Alpha Team leader—added.
This wasn’t his first rodeo. At thirty-four, he’d spent most of his life serving in the military and then working hard to become a member of the elite Delta Force before moving to the private sector and joining Prey. The military had been the only way out of the life his family had planned for him, and he took his job seriously.
Many would say too seriously.
