I don’t want to risk Asher getting jealous.” “I’ll handle him.” I realize as soon as the words leave my mouth that was the wrong thing to say.

“What will you give me not to tell him that?” Fuck. “Can we pretend this conversation just started?” She laughs. “You’re lucky I have such a big crush on you. What do you need?” Thank god. “Is there another way to get past a keypad entry?” She’s quiet for a moment. “Can you see the manufacturer’s name or a serial number on the device?” I lean over and peer at the keypad. When I spot a label, I snap a picture with my phone and send it to her.

“Just sent you a picture.” “Okay, give me a few minutes. Depending on how they have it configured, I might be able to hack it through the app. I’ll call you back when I have something.” I hang up and look at Zeke. “This may take a few minutes.” “I’m not going anywhere.” I catch his gaze wandering up and down the street. “What’s the deal here?” he asks after a minute. “What do you mean?”

“The street. It’s empty.” I hadn’t told him everything I learned from the captive. “Apparently Thalium is using a glamour to block off the street.” “Are you fucking kidding me? Dante would hit the roof.” He rolls his eyes. “What am I saying? If he were around.”

“Think that would get the attention of the Black Guild?” “In a perfect world,” he replies. “But I don’t know about these guys. So far I haven’t seen any indication they’re doing a damn thing about our problem.” “That’s what I thought. I’m beginning to think they only came here for the drug.” “You may be right.” He taps the crossbow against his leg. “Kinda makes this stuff illegal contraband.” “Wouldn’t be the first we’ve dealt with.”

We wait in silence for a couple of minutes until my phone rings. “Yeah?” “You’re only going to have one shot at this so make it right,” Elaine says. “Use this code. Nine-oh-seven-two-five-three.” I punch in the numbers. There’s a soft click, then the door pops open. “Thanks,” I say as I hang up and tuck the phone in my pocket.
