I realized—I had had a purse. Oh, god. Fawn’s face was screwed up with exertion. She’d run after me. I felt like dropping through the cement. I couldn’t read if there was any emotion at all on it. But if they’d read a message from my mom . . . I had nobody to back me up if they’d discovered me and were closing in from all sides.

I had nobody to call to on a walkie talkie. I had walked into this and exposed myself the way I’d been taught never to do, all because I was overtaken with need to drain a girl of blood. I was spinning. “You had a text from your mom, also,” she said, meaningfully, and pulled my phone out of my bag.

“It buzzed as soon as you left.” She was less than three feet away, holding my own screen toward me. Oh god. I backed away from her. What had she seen? I looked at the screen, squinting in the dark against its brightness. In message previews, my mom’s text read: Hey, aaawesome news. Daylight’s sending us some big cases of samples. They have the formula now, for sun resistance, for nutrition. It’s what’s going to market. She looked at me with a furrowed brow.

“That’s good?” “It’s good. Yeah, it’s good.” Phew. “It’s, uh, there’s a study for synthetic blood.” I was so not suspicious. “Oh, cool,” she said. She laughed. “So you don’t need to come see me again.” “I, um, I.” “I’m sorry for in there when I asked if you wanted to sit down with me. I didn’t mean anything. I just thought you looked jumpy.”

“I uh,” I said. I should tell her to get out of this business, that everyone she met wanted to eat her. She was nice, and cute. “I think I’m not cut out for this life, is all,” I said. “For vamping?”

“Vampire stories are always gay but rarely are they so trans. Schrieve’s tale of teen rebellion, friendship, and bloodsucking is ripe with hope for a better world—a world in which networks of mutual aid relationships support outsider communities, and people give and receive trust, pleasure, and magic outside of heterosexuality and government control. Buffy fans, this book will knock your socks off!” —MAIA KOBABE, ALA Alex Award-winning author and illustrator of Gender Queer: A Memoir “Some writers give us a couple of characters, but Hal Schrieve gives us a whole community.

Hir characters breathe; they seethe; they’re driven by rage and longing; and they’re indelible. Fawn’s Blood is unafraid of complexity and mess, and unafraid of love too. This is the queer vampire novel we deserve.” —ISAAC FELLMAN, Lambda Literary Award-winning author of Dead Collections and The Breath of the Sun PRAISE FOR OUT OF SALEM “Tension burns hot until the explosive conclusion, which begs for a sequel.

On fire with magic and revolution.” —Kirkus Reviews “Schrieve . . . provides incisive social commentary via monster-tale tropes. Any reader who has felt it necessary to hide their true identity will find strong characters to connect with in this fun, powerful story.” —Publishers Weekly PRAISE FOR HOW TO GET OVER THE END OF THE WORLD “No one writes the contemporary teen voice better than Hal Schrieve.” —COLLEEN AF VENABLE, author of the National Book Award Longlisted Kiss Number 8 OceanofPDF.com OceanofPDF.com Copyright © 2025 by Hal Schrieve Cover drawing by Casey Nowak All rights reserved.

RACHEL When Cain bit me and put his own bloody fingers in my mouth, I did remember Mom being like, if a vampire ever tries to feed you his blood, don’t drink.

But in the moment, I was looking into his deep, bloodred eyes, and his batlike nose was brushing my cheek, and I just thought, you know, I don’t want to die.
