Feral And The Bad Decisions – Renee Jagger

The Scrap Kings—youthful gangsters who wore yellow—didn’t have the resources to help him. But the River Rats, the ones with the red colors? They had the punch to give him what he needed to get out of this city. It was time to say goodbye to Fort Caerleon and make his way to Manhattan, Avalon, the drow lands, and then freedom forever.
Zeke looked back at the community center. Regret stirred in his chest. He scoffed and focused on the light instead, pushing away strands of brightness from the streetlights to muffle him in darkness. Fort Caerleon hadn’t been too bad, it was true. Amazingly, Tetra was a genuinely good person. He hadn’t known those still existed, except for Sarah. The darkness swirled around him as he hustled down an alley and fluttered to the top of the wall.
Another silent effort of his wings carried him to the next rooftop. Nothing stirred here, even though the thump of music reverberated below. Unwinged creatures could be so oblivious of what happened above their heads. He moved from the shelter of one chimney to the next, keeping the shadows dense. Tetra was nice, it was true. She’d treated him better than he’d expected. When he’d reached the drow lands and found a nice cave in the hills, then piled it full of gold to the ceiling, he’d remember this strange little interlude in his life with fondness.
Send her a gemstone on occasion. For now, he had to move fast. The River Rats hung out near Riverview Street. With effort, he was sure he’d find a few in the seedy nightclub there. Lifting watches and wallets would get him noticed, and then he’d offer his services. It shouldn’t take him long to earn his safe passage to Manhattan. Zeke paused on the rooftop’s edge and gazed across the city, a familiar buzz in his blood. This was what it meant to be alive and free, with trouble always nipping at his heels.
An edge that had evaded him all the time he’d been in Fort Caerleon returned, making him drunk with exhilaration. A tapestry of rooftops lay open before him, filled with opportunity and possibility. A scream tore the night. Zeke barely flinched. This was Port Smogdale. It wasn’t an unusual occurrence. He crossed an alley in a silent bound, his wings helping, and darted from shadow to shadow. “Let me go!”
A girl. Young, judging by her shrill voice, though terrified determination rang in her words. Zeke froze. He recognized that voice. It was Sidney’s daughter, Harper, and she was only fifteen.

Tetra Dupont smirked. Sidney Harris thrust his hands into his hair. He’d seen Val, Tetra, Merritt, and others do impossible things that now made sense. Tetra, whom he had known for months, had wings and shed colorful glitter from her skin. What would this do to his career? What would it do to the 39th Precinct? These paranormals had cleaned up Bay Ridge and wiped dangerous crime families off the scene when the NYPD couldn’t do it. Port Smogdale had a clean river thanks to them. They benefited everyone and everything they touched.
He wanted to raise his daughter in a better world with people who worked to achieve that. That made the decision simple. Tetra spread her hands. “Are you in or out?” “I’m in,” Sidney stated. The being, whatever she was, sitting cross-legged on his coffee table punched the air.
“Yes! I knew you would be. Sid, this’ll be great. I can’t wait to show you all the cool shit I can do. Never mind me.
