Sam seemed to have the same problem with Jeff until Jeff turned his shoulder to block his view. “Hmm. Guess I know when I’m not needed.” Chuckling, he put his Stetson back on. “See you all tomorrow.” Juliet bit back her disappointment. “Right. Tomorrow.” Try though she might, she couldn’t keep her eyes off him as he strode from the large meeting hall and out the door. Why did he have to be so good-looking?

Such a cowboy? But she had to stop thinking that way. It was what got her into trouble to begin with. When she turned back to the kids, she saw Jeff across the room with his friend Ethan and, to her shock, one of their distant relatives whose mother was a Sizemore. With none of her cousins close to her age, she’d been on her own in high school and at the mercy of the mean girls.

Reminding herself not to return to the past, she shrugged off the memory. Belle Sizemore Winston waved to her across the room. Juliet waved back, glad to see her here with Oliver. That meant Juliet wasn’t the only one who hoped involvement with 4-H would help redeem their family’s name. Maybe the boys could encourage each other to better behavior. If only Sam hadn’t left before this new development.

Hairdresser Erin Farber sat with a circle of girls discussing sewing patterns. Last Sunday in the church fellowship hall when Erin had flirted with Sam, Juliet hadn’t recognized her at first because her hair was now blond instead of its original brown. She’d been Erin Sanderson in high school, and she’d been one of the mean girls. Not the worst, but all too eager to please the pack’s leader, Jennifer.

Since coming to Jesus, Juliet had tried her best to forgive them all. Surely, like her, they’d all matured beyond their youthful cruelties. The general 4-H meeting was called to order, and Juliet found seats for herself and Sassy. Two rows in front of them, Lauren Mattson sat with her three teenagers and their little sister, Clementine, who gave Sassy a friendly wave.

Jeff sat with his buddies near the back of the room, so she would have to keep watching over her shoulder to be sure he didn’t leave. “That’s Ginny Gray from my class,” Sassy whispered, pointing to the girl beside Erin. From the looks of her, Ginny was Erin’s daughter.

“Are you a real cowboy, Mr. Sam?” Sam’s heart stirred at the wonder in Juliet’s daughter’s face. “Sort of…” “I can ride.” Juliet’s brother’s face lit up. “Raeder’s been teaching me.” “Okay, but riding herd on a lively cow pony is a lot different from trotting around the corral on an old rescue horse,” Sam pointed out. “Yeah, but—” “And with that—” Juliet took her daughter’s hand and headed toward the house “—let’s not keep Mr. and Mrs. Mattson waiting.” From Juliet’s hunched shoulders as she walked, Sam could tell she was still nervous.

He was dealing with his own nerves. What did his mom expect to gain from having Juliet and her kids come out to the ranch? Was she trying to be a matchmaker between Sam and a Sizemore? What had changed her mind about that notorious family from just a few weeks ago, when neither of his parents could say a good word about a single one of them? Besides, he had no intentions of rekindling his teenage romance with Juliet. Help her? Yes. But let himself love her again?
