His Little Songbird – Leslie James

Working late. Big pitch Monday. His jaw tightened. Of course she was working late. Of course there was a deadline looming, another campaign demanding perfection, another opportunity to destroy herself chasing approval. How late? Probably 9. Too late. Way too late for someone who’d been running on fumes for weeks. That’s too late. It’s my job. Your job won’t matter if you burn out. I’ll be fine. The automatic deflection made frustration surge in his chest. She had no concept of “fine,” had recalibrated her baseline so far into the red zone that functional collapse looked normal.
YaoYao. He put weight behind her name. Authority. The tone he used in boardrooms when executives tried to bullshit him with optimistic projections that ignored reality. Will. She was throwing it back at him. Playful defiance wrapped in her own assertion. He liked it more than he should. Leave at 8. That’s the compromise. You don’t get to tell me when to leave work. Technically true. He had no authority over her schedule, no right to issue commands about her personal time.
Except he’d watched her voice break in that studio recording. Had read reports detailing exactly how close she was to complete collapse. Had decided she needed protection whether she accepted it or not. I’m not telling. I’m asking. Please leave at 8. Long pause. His heart rate kicked up, wondering if he’d pushed too hard. If she’d tell him to fuck off, block his number, retreat back into the isolation that was killing her.
Okay. 8. Relief hit harder than it should. Thank you. You’re welcome. William set down his phone. Stared at the acquisition proposals without seeing them. She’d agreed. Had let him set a boundary, accepted his care disguised as bossiness. Small victory. But victories accumulated. Small ones built into larger patterns, larger patterns into transformed behavior. He just needed to be patient. Consistent. Present. Show her that someone cared whether she took care of herself. And eventually, she’d start caring too.
Monday morning arrived with the particular dread reserved for pitch days.

He’s going to track her down, feed her breakfast every morning, and make her believe she deserves to take up space.
He’s also going to lie about who he is because he’s terrified she’ll run if she knows the truth. If you love morally gray men who protect fiercely, if you crave the slow burn of healing through care, if you need boss/good girl dynamics wrapped in tenderness… you’re in exactly the right place.
