That gave her time to go into work and explain to Joan, the Office Manager, what had happened. As she had predicted, Joan was just as worried as she was about Claire. She also knew her well and agreed that it would be completely out of character for her to act in the way that Chloe described. She reassured her that she could take some of her annual leave, plus some compassionate leave. It would give her time to speak to the police there and get some more information.

After speaking to Miguel later and advising him of the time of her flight, he told her that Marco had insisted on picking her up from the airport and that he would be waiting for her in the Arrivals Lounge. He had booked a room for her at the hotel and Marco would take her straight there.

She thanked him and said that she would look out for him once she had landed. As she stepped out of the plane and down the steps, the blazing heat almost took her breath away. It was the height of summer now. The sun was beating down on her back with fiery intensity as she made her ways across the tarmac and into the welcome coolness of the terminal. After collecting her luggage she made her way to Arrivals.

She spotted Marco immediately. He had a huge smile on his face as he waved frantically to get her attention. As she approached him he reached out to take her suitcase and kissed her gently on the cheek. “Welcome Senora Chloe. I wish it was for happier reasons. But it is good to see you again.’’ “It’s good to see you too Marco. Thank you so much for coming to pick me up.

I know how busy you are. I could have got a taxi with another company,’’ she said as she noticed how tired he looked. “Not at all. We wouldn’t hear of it. Miguel wanted to come but I told him to get some sleep and that you would see him later. He has been out every night, all night sometimes, looking for Claire. He is totally exhausted. He just will not accept that she has left him.

It really has broken him Chloe. Come, I’ll take you to the car. We can talk on the journey to the hotel.’’ She climbed into the passenger seat. As Marco started the engine, the air conditioning began to flow throughout the car. She embraced the calming coolness – such a welcome escape from the suffocating heat outside. She turned to Marco. “ I agree with Miguel too. I know Claire well.

She scolded herself for forgetting to put her gloves on. This had been a particularly hard Winter. She had almost forgotten what it felt like to see the sun and enjoy it’s warmth. She longed for the end to this endless onslaught of miserable, wet, icy weather. She was also late for work.

Again! She thought to herself how she should remember to allow extra time in the mornings to defrost the car. Her efforts to remove the ice from the windscreen seemed to be getting her nowhere. The car was close to resembling a mini igloo. She wondered if she would even be able to get it started.

Finally, she managed to clear enough of the ice away so that she had a small window of vision on the driver’s side. As her fingers were now so numb that they felt they belonged to someone else, she decided enough was enough and climbed into the driver’s seat to escape the biting cold. Luckily the engine coughed into life at the second attempt. She turned on the heater and as the warmth flooded through the car, she luxuriated in the moment as she finally felt the life coming back into her fingers.

She activated the wipers to remove the rest of the ice and looked at her watch. She was already 20 minutes late. Luckily her office was only 10 minutes away. She would offer her excuses to her manager and make her a coffee. That usually did the trick. And anyway, as she reminded herself, she wasn’t late every morning.
