Imperial economic control, practically totalitarianism, puts all of the production to the service of the army and of fiscal revenues. Imperial law organizes into corporations the professions that provide support to the army, and imposes hereditary transmission of profession (the son will occupy the profession of the father) in order to ensure perennity.

Appearance of the hereditary status of colonists. Legal attachment of peasants to their land, with which they can be sold. Religion: Traditional civil religion becomes a unique cult imposed in order to favor central power. Official cult of the Sol Invictus, and then State Christianism. The emperor is divinized (and then sacralized with Christianity). Civil religion is no more limited to the historical center of the Empire but imposed to all populations of the Empire.

Sciences: Stagnation of technological progresses, innovations are not used. The absence of entrepreneurial liberty constitutes a break to innovation, despite advanced scientific knowledge. Hero of Alexandria, in the Ist century B.C.8, invents automata powered by water, the automatic opening of doors by compressed air, and the first fee-based automated water dispenser (for purification at the entrance of temples) and creates the Aeolipile, the first steam machine.

Relations with the external world: Transformation of the hegemony into an empire. Domination of vassals without further extension, except for punctual interventions. The more authoritarian character of the central government is felt in the way the power of B is expressed outside of the nation, leaving less autonomy to local governments. Provinces headed by governors. Homogenized institutions and general rationalization of the central domination, leading to a loss of local autonomy, which manifests itself through the fiscal pressure exerted by the imperial state.

The cult of imperial government is imposed to all inhabitants of the Empire. Methods of warfare: Professional imperial army, important weight in the State apparatus, auxiliaries are employed. Imperial army: enrollment at the local level, armies are very attached to their province of origin. Important increase in numbers of people serving in the military. Appearance of foreign auxiliaries. 2. Deepening the analysis with a zoom: Pythagoreanism and Freemasons In order to show by an example that the models of cycles that we have described correspond so well to observations that they support equally important insight into the smaller scales of civilizations as they do with the larger scales, we will perform a zoom and focus briefly on the comparative role of secret mystic-scientific societies in the evolution of ideas and political events in Greece and Europe.

While the relevance of Freemasons to the evolution of societies and the planned or improvised aspects of their contributions remain debated, there is a broad recognition of their participation to sociopolitical changes of the XVIIIth, XIXth and XXth centuries.
