MIA. That’s…great. (Whisper:) 1 can’t promise anything and I certainly don’t want to enable her, but this might be one case where giving in is necessary. DAD. (Unconvinced that this will work; to HOLLY:) This is NOT over, Bubble! (DAD exits. ) HOLLY. Wow. He listens to you. MIA. He certainly listens to you. If he didn’t, I wouldn’t be here. C’mon: Kenyan Independence Day. (HOLLY thinks.) HOLLY. I told you: December 12″, 19 — oh. 1963. What do you mean you wouldn’t be here? (pause) MIA.

You know what I’m talking about. (HOLLY stares at her blankly.) You run things around here. You are the topdog. Believe me: Daddy knows it. HOLLY. Don’t call him Daddy. MIA. Next question: approximately how many refugees did Kenya host by the end of 2001? HOLLY. Why are you obsessed with Africa? MIA. Somebody should be! HOLLY. What for? MIA. Sue me for trying to widen your scope of knowledge! HOLLY. Maybe I will! MIA. GOOD! You do that! HOLLY. Good!

‘Cuz I probably will! MIA. Bring it on! HOLLY. You’re obnoxious. MIA. You’re just noxious HOLLY. You’re an Oreo! (silence) MIA. Why would you say something like that? (HOLLY shrugs. ) HOLLY. They call me that, too. So whatever? I just started taking it as a compliment. MIA. Do you think you’re an Oreo? HOLLY. No. I think I’m a Thin Mint. MIA. I don’t know what that means, but you do so why let the dicks of the world get under your skin?

HOLLY. I don’t. MIA. Seriously. HOLLY. (Really listening to her:) OK. MIA. Good. So. Refugees? HOLLY. I don’t want to talk about some smelly refugees. MIA. You go from victim to predator faster than the speed of light in a vacuum. HOLLY. ‘Tachyons are faster. MIA. Is there anything you don’t know? HOLLY. Hey! I just figured out what you’re doing. You’re lazy and you’re trying to combine my schoolwork with your thesis research. (Pause. MIA glares at her.)

I’m right, aren’t I? (teasing chant:) ’’m smarter than you are! I’m smarter than you are! Pretty soon I’ll be able to read all your thoughts! MIA. No. N-no. I refuse to allow you to transform me into a bratty sister. I don’t even havea sister. I refuse to stoop any further. HOLLY. That’d be hard for you, anyway. You’re starting to get a little lumpy around the middle.
