Hot Cars And Homicide – SC Merritt

“Thanks! I hope you’ll come tonight to the town hall meeting! She can use all the support she can get! She’s gonna be sharing her ideas for the town if she’s elected.” “Oh, I’m planning on being there. Wouldn’t miss it! Gotta run!” she said as the dog tugged and practically pulled her down the street. The town was buzzing about the town meeting. Almost everyone who came in said they planned to be there. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it made me excited—really excited—for the first time since we started this crazy ride.
We tried to send Momma home early, but she wanted to stay. I think she was just trying to keep her mind occupied, so she could keep her nerves in check. We closed the shop at 3:00 on the dot and all went home to get ready for the big night.
“GLORY, WE HAVE A PROBLEM.” Momma began talking as soon as I answered her call. “I’ve got a flat tire, so you’re gonna have to come get me or I’ll be late for the town meeting.” “Oh, gosh! I’m almost ready to walk out the door. I’ll feed Izzy and be there in a few. We’ll worry about the flat later. Jake or Hunt will take care of it.” I hung up and ran to the bedroom to run a brush through my unmanageable hair.
Now that it was getting longer, it was a lost cause. I pinned it back off my face, slapped on some lipstick and grabbed my purse. Izzy reminded me in no uncertain terms that it was supper time. “Oh, Izzy! I almost forgot you! I’m sorry!” I scooped her kibble into her bowl and gave her fresh water. “Wish your Nana luck! I’ll see you later tonight!” And out the door I ran.
Momma was sitting on her front porch waiting for me when I pulled into the driveway. I immediately saw the flat tire. But it wasn’t just a flat tire. “Momma! That tire’s been slashed! And so has the back tire!” “I know, Glory, but we don’t have time to worry about that right now.
We’ll be late.
