A load of tree-hugging tribal bollocks if you ask me,” she scoffed. “But trying to backstab Tom like that? If other shifters find out what happened, they’ll rip Jason’s pack apart themselves.” As they all drank, I could almost see the blood revitalizing them—like their muscles filled out, their eyes sharpened, their energy rising by the minute. “So shifting takes it out of you?” I asked. “You guys actually get tired?” Maisie nodded. “Yeah, kind of. Think of it like a human working out.

You need water to rehydrate—we need blood. Shifting burns through a ton of energy. When was the last time you turned into an animal, y’know?” She laughed softly. “Running, jumping, using our powers, even pushing people drains us. So we have to replenish.” Freiah chimed in with a smirk. “Even then, it’s not the full package out of a bag.

We still have the primal instinct to hunt. Humans, unfortunately.” She continued, almost playfully. “We’re not like the vampires in your books and movies. We’re not ‘vegetarians’ who only hunt animals. There’s something about engaging in the hunt—being a predator—that’s almost as primal as the thirst itself. Don’t get me wrong, we don’t need to kill as often as we need to drink blood…”

Her smirk softened into something almost clinical. “But we do need to do it. It’s practically prescription.” “Drinking from an IV bag versus a human directly is like eating reheated leftovers instead of a meal fresh off the stove,” Freiah said with a little shrug. “Same ingredients—but the experience is completely different.” Tom broke his usual silence to throw in his two cents. “IV blood satisfies the need. Fresh blood satisfies the instinct.

Do not forget —we may look like you, but we are the predators.” “Ooooh, scary,” Cole mocked, waving his fingers theatrically. “Zoe isn’t scared of us anymore. She’s practically one of us now.” Freiah chimed in, smirking at him. “He’s just happy to finally have someone else in the group without a power.” She raised her brows at Cole as she lobbed the jab.

Cole redirected the fire towards Tom instantly. “At least I don’t have one and never use it.” I swallowed, then decided to take my own swing. “Why don’t you ever use your power?” I asked Tom. He turned those cold piercing eyes on me—sharp enough to make me think I’d overstepped—but after a heartbeat, his expression softened. He’d realized it was genuine curiosity, not accusation. “I know how to use my sword,” he said calmly.

“I simply keep it sheathed.” A metaphor. And an obvious dodge. Freiah sighed as she pushed herself out of her seat, her leather pants giving a sharp little squeak as she popped to her feet. “What he means,” she said, circling toward him, “is that he doesn’t like seeing people change. Isn’t that right, Batman?” She leaned down over him, her voice teasing but her eyes daring.

Writing wasn’t something I’d ever really given much thought to before. I’d always loved storytelling, but I’d never considered putting one of my own stories into words. It turns out I just didn’t have the right characters in my life to make it compelling and my story wasn’t ready to be told until now. Through this process, I’ve learned what it truly means to pour yourself into something. What you are about to read is something I’d describe as fictional non- fiction.

The characters you’ll meet are drawn from real people, and the events that unfold are reflections and parallels of things that have happened to us in one way or another. This book became an exercise in becoming more complete as a person—a way of understanding myself through creation. It is part of my personal pursuit of mastery of both the pen and the sword. I hope you enjoy it as I translate my thoughts and feelings into words, and I can’t wait for you to meet my friends.
