The slime cemented his boots into place. They weren’t going anywhere. Why, oh why, had he stupidly marched forward?! Straight into trouble! The sound was definitely getting louder. It reminded Daniel of socks squishing inside wet sneakers—sucking, sloshing. Breathe. Stay calm. After all, it’s only a test. Daniel scanned the surrounding floor. He needed to find something— anything—to pry up his boots.

There were rocks. A few saplings poked up through the dirt. But nothing looked like it would work. Movement! Daniel’s head whipped to the side. He spied a shape bobbing up and down, dragging itself around a corner. The creature was so nasty and primal it made Daniel recoil. Or try to. The creature looked like one of the small hairs on the slime, but multiplied a hundred times bigger. The slime creature stared at Daniel with two yellow, beady eyes that hung wide apart in its green, semitransparent head.

It moved with dozens of tentacles, some smooth and vinelike, others knobby and gnarled like ancient tree roots. A perfectly round bubble of spit or something enveloped its head. The bubble grew and shrank with its rapid breathing. What happened to the wooden popups? The animatronics?! Maybe the slime creature wasn’t as dangerous as it looked.

That was it. The thing probably would come up and gum on his arm or something if he let it. But just in case, Daniel trained his pistol on the creature while he continued to tug and work his boots free. Despite how safe the creature was, he wasn’t going to trust it. If the thing got much closer, he’d shoot a hole in it and be done with the critter. Clean and simple. A flat rock caught his attention. It wasn’t far away. If he could grab it, maybe it would work to pry up his boots.

Daniel took his eyes off the creature for barely a moment. Long enough to reach for the rock. He stretched. It was just out of reach! He unbuckled a boot, which let him stretch out farther. His fingertips touched the rock— Scraped it— Only, the creature had advanced. And that’s when it struck! The tentacles lashed out, wrapping around Daniel’s leg. His uniform crinkled and shriveled as it dissolved in the beast’s grip.

Daniel smelled the bitter tang. Acid! Instinctively, he pulled away and broke free. His foot slipped out from the loosened boot. In one swift move, Daniel leaned back up. Balanced with rock in hand and— He shot the creature point-blank. The laser blast instantly obliterated the creature. That was the good news.

What a dream he had. A nightmare! Daniel stretched, glad to be awake again. Back to a world where the Earth didn’t sit in a glass jar. Ha! He flopped back onto his pillow, a grin on his face.

Granted, the best part of his dream was flying around in some spaceship. What was it called again? The Moses!
