He fell asleep quickly, mut- tering in his sleep as his eyes flickered, telling me he was dreaming. I stayed awake for a while, his words running around my head on a loop. It’s not the gunshot that hurts, little bird. I hated how much pain I’d caused him. Why couldn’t he just give me a minute to gather my thoughts and I could have told him that, despite everything—our past, the years that had passed, what I’d accused him of—I still had feelings for him, and I wanted to be with him.

But now, well, now, I had to move on. Although, how was that possible when my heart belonged to him, and my past was chasing me like a ghost? Eventually, I let my eyes close and sleep stole my thoughts. I woke with a start, struggling to breathe. I panicked that some- one had got to me, but then I remembered that I was in Thomas Lanton’s house, so that would be impossible. My eyes adjusted to the blackness of the room and I tried to scream as I found Sean strad- dling me, his hand around my throat.

Even in the low light of the room, I could see the vacant look in his eyes as he stared at the wall as if he was seeing something other than me. I tried to call out his name and shake him from his night terror, but his grip robbed me of my voice. The air grew thin, and I bucked my hips, trying to wriggle out of his hold, but he didn’t move.

I curled my fists and pummelled his chest. I even pushed on his gunshot wound, hoping the pain would break his trance-like state, but nothing worked. As the edges of my vision darkened, I reached out, grabbing the lamp from next to the bed and smashing it against the wall. But it still had no effect on him. Instead, he wrapped his other hand around my neck, baring down so hard I waited for my windpipe to crumble.

OceanofPDF.com BEFORE YOU READ Please note, I am a UK author and this is a UK book with UK spellings.

One of the characters is American, so American words have been used to. I meant it that way, but if you notice any sneaky typos, please feel free to contact me through my website. Once you’re done, I’d love it if you could take a moment to re- view the book – even if it’s just a star rating as it really helps us indie authors get noticed. Thank you!!! You can check out a full trigger warning list for this book on my website too – www.esmetaylor.co.uk/TW But, this be a dark-ish one, so if you’re not a fan of morally grey men, dub-con, somnophilia, violence, guns, blood, knife play, dirty talk, angry sex, and general threat to life then, I would stop here.

For those of you who want all of that, turn the page. Sean and Hope are waiting. If it’s late night when you start reading, and you’re tired for work to- morrow, I cannot be held responsible! OceanofPDF.com PROLOGUE HOPE “GOD, that outfit should be illegal. I’d give my right bollock to rip it open and sink into your sweet, wet pussy,” a familiar English voice whispered from the doorway of the library as I walked through the house. I froze, brushing my hands over the royal blue sundress, unable to hide the smile from my lips.

I kept my gaze fixed forward, despite how much I wanted to see his beautiful face and run my fingers through his thick, dark hair. “Don’t let my dad hear you say that.” He wrapped his pinky finger in mine, making sure to stay well hidden, the slight contact making me shiver.

“Well, don’t turn around and give me away then. I just want to let you know that I have to go out for a bit. I’ll see you later, yeah?” “It’s Ivan’s birthday. You have to be here.” I sounded like a pouty teenager. Not the look I should be giving off to the older man who set my body and soul on fire.
