In The Cruelty Of Gold – Jozanne Morgan (1)

There would be no point in lying. “No.” She strolled up to my side, gazing at the fresh morning. There was no glimpse of the village from my room, only the forest and the Blu Mountains. Its snowy caps reflected the light of daybreak with a ferocity that made admiring them impossible. A few stray peach clouds hovered in the far distance. It looked to be the making of a beautiful day. “It breaks my heart to see you going through all of this,” Tiana whispered, voice tight.
In this light, her caramel eyes and hair glowed a honey-amber gold. “Things were bad enough before Alliard,” she added. All this mystery surrounding my mother and these tunnels had led me to forget about him. I cleared my throat before asking, “If I rebuff him, do you think they’ll figure out Enzo and I?”
She cleared her throat. “No. For all anyone knows, you are still mourning the one you lost.” Keith. Maybe mentioning him could have worked in my favor. Not that I felt any better for it. “But he will not care,” Tiana said. She glanced over at Cole, a small smile ghosting her lips. “He reminds me of my brother.” I knew nothing about Tiana’s life, nothing beyond her husband and employment.
“Where is he?” “Vildiera will be fetching Enzo any moment now.” Despite how well Tiana was doing in her common tongue, this was another miscommunication. “I’m glad to hear that, but I was asking about your brother.” “I know.” She stared out at the horizon, longing deep in her eyes. “He rode out to give a message to Dantril.” When the Cleansing began.
My heart sank. Tiana did not know if he’d made it or where he’d died. “He was just as sweet and kind,” she added, nodding to Cole.
