The only person present is Lexis, and he was kind enough to give us some space. He’s standing in the distance, too far to hear the conversation we’re having. She looks back at me and slowly shakes her head. “I still don’t expect you to forgive me for what I’ve done, but please know I will never tell Elsovor your secret. I won’t tell anyone. I owe you at least that much.” My heart stops at her words. She knows I can transcend? How is that possible?

“I sense powers, remember? I know everything, Rys,” she says, as if she can read my thoughts as well. Feeling panicked, I ready myself to deny any such secret exists. But she speaks again before I can. “I would never put you in that kind of danger. I’ve already helped them take so much from you.”

She gives me a slight smile before turning on her heel and walking back down the hallway, nodding to Lexis as she passes by. If Malary knows I can send my mind into the Void, then does she also know I’m in contact with a Voiden? Does she know I can communicate with Ash? But she said she would never tell.

Why would she never tell? I lay on my bed. Closing my eyes, I will myself to sleep like I’ve done every night for the past two weeks. I blink rapidly, thinking the action will allow me to see my surroundings quicker. I frantically look around the forest, searching for the man whose presence I’m desperate to feel. I scream out in anger. He’s not here, and if he’s not here, then where is he? Dead. Ash is dead, and he’ll never know that I believe him.

That I trust him. He’ll never know that I want to help him. I press my hands against the top of my head, trying to keep my emotions in check. I don’t have time to fall apart. “You miss me?” I turn around to face the owner of that magnetic voice, exhaling as my eyes lock on his. He’s alive. And he’s here. He takes a step toward me, stumbling in the process.

A thick bead of sweat emerges on his forehead, and I rush to his side, using my weight to support him as I help him settle on the grass-covered ground. Placing one hand on his knee, I rest the other on his shoulder. He looks up at me, confusion clouding his gaze. The last time we were together, I was still skeptical, still hesitant to believe him, to trust him. But now?

So much has changed. Everything has changed, and I think he can sense it. “You’re hurt,” I state, scanning his body for injuries. “What happened? I thought you were—” “Dead?” he finishes for me, his voice a painful rasp. “Were you worried about me, Rys?”

I step. He steps. I step. He steps. Our feet hit the floor in a steady, even rhythm, the noise so consistent it should calm me, but it doesn’t. I know he’s trying to give me as much space as possible, but the feeling of being watched—of always being followed—never sits well with me, even if it’s only Lexis who’s doing the watching. Drawing closer to the room decorated with colorful tapestries, I slip the locket I’ve been clutching under my oversized, copper-colored tunic.

As I quicken my pace, the footsteps that had been following so close fade before disappearing altogether. Without looking back, I know he’s stopped his pursuit. Never once has Lexis ventured into the lecture hall alongside me, but as my Keeper, he’ll be waiting just outside the door. Passing through the threshold, I take in my surroundings. Tapestries stretch from the floor to the ceiling, covering the faded gray of the cobblestone walls that separate us from the outside world.

Each one has a story, a history behind it, and we’ve spent many World lessons analyzing them.
