tow can | wear a swimsuit without Mair sticking out? Longing to Swim You might be able to cover your pubic hair with your swimsuit bot- toms. If some hair shows, try wearing a suit with a skirt or ruffle at the bottom, or a “boy-cut” or “hipster” with bottoms cut low across the thigh. These suit styles hide hair better than bikini bottoms or other regular leg cuts.

But if you really want to wear a bikini or you’re wor- ried about your hair showing no matter what suit you wear, you might consider shaving the edges of your pubic hair. Shaving there is tricky, because girls can get ingrown hairs when the hair is growing back, or the new growth can be extremely itchy.

If you think you might want to shave, talk to a parent first and, at least the first time, don’t shave your bikini area on your own. Periods Dear American Girl, | am SO nervous about Starting my period. Every time | use tne restroom | look at my pee to see If | did. I’m just really Scared and am not sure | can do it.

Nervous g } I oe ee aRAae aan 2 2m, Thinking about something before it happens is sometimes a lot scarier than the actual thing when it does happen. You can ease some of your worry by being prepared ahead of time with pads at home and in your backpack. It might also be reassuring to think about your period as just another natural body process.

In some ways, it’s not so different from other body processes, such as breathing or sleeping or digesting food. Our bodies are made to do these things, they know how to do them automatically, and they’ve been doing them for a long, long time. Your body will do fine when it’s time. Talking with a parent about such private matters as your period can feel embarrassing or awkward.

Remember that your mom has been through it, too, and she remembers her own nervousness. She’s probably waiting for you to bring it up when you feel the time is right. Try saying, “Mom, | might be getting my period this year, so | was wondering if we could buy supplies so I’m ready?” You and your mom can put together a first-period kit for your school backpack that includes a pad or two, a change of underwear, and wet wipes in a small makeup bag or new pencil pouch.

At home, have a box of pads on hand. Then, when your period does start, you’ll have the supplies you need—and you’ll be more comfortable (and maybe even excited!) telling your mom, since you’ve already been talking about it. Dear American Girl, I’m wondering how much blood to expect. Should | start wearing pads every day just in case | have a surprise period? ttow fast does the blood come?
