His need for exercise and running around outdoors, was a good routine and it resulted in time spent in the forest, fields and beach. Since I had studied some veterinary medicine as well of my access to the butcher shop, I made, fresh dog food. This recipe was very healthy, and I was proud of the fact that I made sure Apollo’s start in life was solid. I did not have the heart to have him move with me to Los Angeles and potentially be homeless.

I consulted with my veterinarian about finding him a forever home. While I waited for a possible foster home, we spent our time together, running at the beach, hiking in the forest and visiting with friends. The day came, when I got the call. My vet had arranged for me to bring him to his office and there, Apollo would have a chance to meet his new family.

They were a retired dentist and his wife. Their home was on the beach, just north of San Luis Obispo, in the small town of Morro Bay. I invited them out for lunch, and we had a wonderful meeting. They also had two female, Standard Poodles. The combination of a safe home, excellent care, companionship and plenty of sandy beach front, made this a good fit. The deal was done, and I had the task of bringing his bedding, one of my old T- shirts and his vet records, to the clinic.

I said my good-byes. I heard Apollo’s bark as I drove away. It was a very sad day. When I arrived home, I started organizing my belongings. There was no need to be in a hurry at this juncture of my life. The unforeseen future had held many mysteries. But for now, it was my plan to spend time with my friends.

Most of us had worked in the restaurant industry and when we did come together, we had ample food and drink. My last dinner in San Luis Obispo was with our neighbors, who were from American Samoa. I loved these folks. They were joyful, charming and had a sharp wit. The dinner was a grand event. I had secured a whole pig from the meat company where I used to work.

My story began in Los Angeles, California on September 4, 1948. I am telling it through the perspective of how I saw events in the moment. These early experiences had a very profound effect on me. I was a 2nd child born to Barbara Berryman, a Registered Nurse and Sloan Berryman, a Neurosurgeon. They were graduates of USC and UCLA. A surgeon married a nurse. This sounds like the classic scenario.
