He paused, trying to decide if he should bring up his own current situation. With a couple of drinks down, he set his better judgment aside and took a risk. “You said you did counseling?” “That’s a large part of a priest’s duties, so, yes, I did quite a lot of it. Is there something you need that I can help with?” Coach asked. “Well, I was planning on seeing a psychiatrist,” Matt said, “But maybe I can bounce something off of you.”

“Shoot,” said Coach, “Oh, sorry, guess I shouldn’t have said that.” Matt smiled. “OK.” He cleared his throat and took a breath in preparation. “I hear a person talking to me who has been gone for over two years. She helps me with my work. There. I said it.” Coach took a sip of his Jameson. “I’m assuming you knew this person when she was alive?” “We were lovers and a committed couple for twenty-four years. We both worked for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, NCIS.

I’m sure you heard the story of the KGB agent who killed all the sailors?” “You were involved in that?” Coach said, raising his eyebrows. “I was the reason Makarov was doing what he was doing. He kidnapped Randy, my girlfriend, and took her to Russia, where she died in front of me at Makarov’s hands.” Coach gave a whistle.

“Wow. That’s a lot. And now you hear Randy speaking?” “I just started hearing her voice recently. Not only does she speak, but we have conversations. She has been giving me a lot of good advice.” “Well, you finally admit I’m helping. I was wondering if I’d ever get an affirmation from you, Bertram,” Randy said from some vague place behind Matt. Because of the pause, Coach said, “She’s talking to you right now, isn’t she?” Matt nodded. “Matt, I’ve seen a lot of weird and unexplainable things in my life.

My time in Vietnam produced more than a few ghosts that I’ve had to deal with.” “Oh, geeze, he’s going with the ghost thing,” said Randy. “Walk away, Matt, this guy’s a loser.” “I’m not saying you’re hearing a ghost,” Amos said, almost as though he had heard Randy. “I’m just saying that in the sense of ‘unseen things,’” Coach said.

“Grief can produce a whole helluva lot of weird things, and everybody grieves in their own way.

Writing a book is no exception. Yes, the author has an important role, but there is a supporting cast that is critical to the book.

I want to thank my family, who are so supportive, and most especially my wife and fellow author, K.E. Meuir, without whom this or any other book I have written would be forever locked in my brain. I appreciate the honest dialog, ideas, and conversations over wine as this book was written.

I am also grateful to Matt Henderson-Ellis, my developmental editor extraordinaire. His hard work, kind and gentle criticism, and honesty made this a much better book. I also learned that I really like to overuse the word “beautiful.” So, Matt, beautiful job!
