Phase 43 – LIFT STAFF INVENERATION Action P and M e Lift the staff, and hold it upright in front of the chest. Hold the hit-end of the staff with the left hand, palm turned inward. Move the staff in respectful veneration close to the chest. Phase 44 – BEND FORWARD Action P and M e Bring the staff down and hold it pressed on the floor with the hit-end pointing forward.

Then move body down to the front, chest almost touching the staff, then push up with both hands and straighten body. Phase 45 – STAND UPRIGHT, MOVE BACK RIGHT FOOT Action P and M e From the ‘Squat’ posture, stand up with the right foot in the rear. While doing this, the staff should be held in the right hand and swung clockwise on the right side with the wrist rotating. Without breaking the flow of the staff execute a hit at the chin of the opponent in front swinging the staff upward from the left side and then hold it on the right side at the waist line with both hands.

Meanwhile, move right foot further backwards and crouch turning the body a little to the right. Phase 46 – STEP RIGHT AND HIT TEMPLE Action P and M e Stepping forward with the right foot execute a hit at the left temple. The staff should be lifted to the level of the right shoulder and swung to hit. The staff of both P and M should be meeting mid point. Phase 47 – RETREAT RIGHT AND CROUCH Action P and M e Step right foot backwards by sliding it by the side of the left instep, and crouch.While doing this the staff should be swung overhead and behind the back clockwise and brought to the right waist-line.

College of Physical Education, Madras that our father, Chirakkal T. Sreedharan Nair started working on this manual. He showed the very first handwritten manuscript to his colleague and friend, Martin H. Trieb who was the Fulbright Lecturer from America at the College. Having gone through the manuscript, Mr. Trieb thought that the book was “thorough enough to satisfy the most exacting research scholar, yet simple enough to satisfy the layman”. Back at home in retirement, the work of expanding the content was taken up in bits and pieces.

Almost always at hand were Peechaali Narayanan and Vijayan, who were Father’s intimate and outstanding disciples. In 1978, Father started reworking on the final draft of this Manual. In that we collaborated with suggestions on the treatment of the subject. Many traditional Malayalam oral commands (vsaithaaris) were tendered in appropriate English expressions. The language of the text was edited and sometimes rewritten to make it more direct and lucid. The completed manuscript was ready. Many years after Fathet’s death, when we were ready to publish this Manual, we wrote a rather elaborate Introduction and got the entire set of action photographs shot.

M.A. Sadanand (Chennai), Kamala Chandrakant (Mumbai) and Vani Mantha went through the manuscript for language. Linu Kumar, Sashi Kumar, Dhanesh, Surendran, Jithesh, Ajesh and Seema (students of the Sree Bharat Kalari) posed for the photographs in this Manual. Lakshmanan, our friend and teaching colleague at the Kalari, was a constant presence during the long photo-sessions. M. Vijayakumar, our dear friend, professional photographer and multimedia expert from Chennai, patiently shot several thousands of pictures, arranged all the final ones in sequential otder in CDs and enjoyed working on this book as much as we did.
