Kevyn developed all the products and directed the gorgeous ad campaigns, shot by Ave- don and Meisel and featuring his favorite models, such as Kristen McMenamy, Jenny Shimizu, and Jaime Rishar. Japanese beauty fans carried on as if he were a rock star when he made department: store appearances in Tokyo. In 1994, Kevyn was in the midst of working on his first book, The Art of Makeup, which had been the brainchild of Donald Reuter, his boyfriend.

In the midst of the production process, Kevyn and Donald broke up, but they kept their pro- fessional relationship intact. Donald would go on to be the creative director of Kevyn’s next two books. No makeup artist had produced anything remotely similar to it, for a simple reason: only Kevyn had that breadth of work. Kevyn dedicated the book to his parents and the memory of his cousin Jay.
