Jackson said yes, but changed his mind after he saw a segment on the local news that the police were looking for the bike in connection with a double homicide. He called Durden and told him to remove it from his property. By now, even Kinterie Durden knew that the Yamaha was hot. The bike he’d killed two men for had been in his possession less than 12 hours. Now, he had to get rid of it. This he did by riding into the woods in Putnam County and dumping it there.

He then called his girlfriend and asked her to pick him up. The pair returned to her house. Durden was arrested there at 5:46 the next morning. This was not a difficult case for prosecutors to make. The only question was whether Kinterie Durden would face trial as an adult or as a juvenile. Given the cold-blooded, premeditated nature of the crime, that was always a moot point. Durden was charged with two counts of malice murder, two counts of felony murder, two counts of armed robbery, two counts of felony aggravated assault, and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

He was looking at a long time behind bars if convicted. Kinterie Durden’s initial response was to claim innocence. It wasn’t he who had murdered Davoddren Harris and Cortez White. It was his friend, Roger Jackson. The problem with that story was that Jackson had an alibi, and the police had footage from several security cameras that showed Durden racing the Yamaha around town on the afternoon of the murders. Durden then changed his tune, admitting that he’d never had the $1,500 to buy the dirt bike.

His plan all along was to ask for a test ride and then steal the bike. But that plan went out the window when Harris asked him to pony up the cash. He already knew that Harris was carrying a gun. He’d seen it in his waistband. Now, here he sat, in the backseat of a pickup on a quiet, country road with two strangers, one of them certainly armed.

He felt threatened, certain that things would turn violent once Harris realized that he did not have the money. That was why he panicked and drew his weapon. It was self-defense. Again, this narrative was easily debunked. Davoddren Harris had met Durden at his house. He knew where he lived. How was Durden going to get away with stealing the bike when Harris knew where to find him? Also, there was no evidence of any threat to Durden’s life. Harris was indeed armed, but his gun was still tucked in his waistband.

He’d neither drawn the weapon nor fired it. Kinterie Durden was the one who had opened fire. He’d done it while the vehicle was in motion and had shot his victims in the back of the head.
