My fists ball up at my sides. “It’s Alycia.” I turn around to face him. “You would know that if you paid attention.” “I don’t see why you want to hang around those ghetto people.” I scoff. “Those people are her family and they mean something to me.”

“What, one of those ladies talked you out of being with me?” “No, I just want to be single.” “Single?” He raises an eyebrow heavenward. “I mean, why would you want to do that? I have a dinner Friday with my law firm, and I need you there.” There it is. Not want. Need. I sigh, pinching the bridge of my nose. “Find someone else.” His jaw clenches. “Are you seeing someone else?” he asks. His sweet tone switches to something accusatory.

“No. Look, I’m tired. It’s been a long day.” My face heats up, but I walk toward the hallway, hoping he’ll take the hint. “I have to get back to work. Can we talk over dinner tomorrow?” “No, William. I’m done. I said it, and I meant it.”

My voice doesn’t shake. I look him in the eye when I say it. He shakes his head. “You’re going to regret this. I’m the best thing that’s ever happened to you.” He says, grumbling and walking out of my apartment. He slams the door behind him. The sound echoes, and my shoulders ground. “Thank god.

Leave me alone,” I murmur to myself, letting the silence settle. I roll my eyes at him. The best thing? Please. He thinks too highly of himself. All he cares about is his image, not the actual relationship. I head to my bedroom so I can take a shower.

I peel off my clothes slowly, and I smile to myself. The air feels lighter with him gone. Sitting on my bed and I hold my phone in my hand. Should I unblock Antoine? Shoot, what do I have to lose? I’m single. Me: Made it home. Thanks for dinner. Antoine: Anytime, mama. See you soon. My heart races, and I think about him. I don’t know what this is between us, but I’m enjoying it.

Whatever it is, it feels real. It feels different. And I’m not ready to let it go. * * * I arrive at Carlesha’s house, and it feels weird not having a man by my side. It’s been over a week since he popped up at my apartment. Usually, Will would come to these things with me, but he’s in the past. I’m not exactly ready to bring my situationship to friend things just yet.

You made it!” Alycia says, running over to me in her princess outfit. Her tiny princess heels click against the gym floor as she rushes me, almost tripping over the hem of her pretty pastel long dress. Alycia’s long pink and purple braids flow in the air, and she hugs me. Her arms wrap tight around my waist, and she smells like baby lotion and pink bubblegum. I look and see this fine dark skinned man staring at me from across the gymnasium.

I tune him out, and I lean down to brace her. “Always, Princess Alycia. You know I couldn’t miss my favorite person in the whole wide world’s birthday. You look beautiful,” I say, smiling down at her cute little face with those precious dimples. Her brown skin glows under the lights. She twirls, showing off her outfit. Her diamond scepter and matching crown sparkle under the community center lights.

“My uncle, Nico, bought my outfit. Granny says he paid for everything,” she says, spilling her family tea. She lowers her voice as if it’s a secret. Nico? His name doesn’t ring a bell. I run through faces in my head, old case notes, family visits, court dates. Maybe a play uncle? I’ve known Alycia since she was two. When her mom struggled and CPS stepped in, my department pushed foster care.

I fought to keep her with family by getting her grandmother approved. They hate kinship placements, and act like foster homes are better. Probably cause there’s more funding for foster care.
