They hurried to pay their bill and raced back along the street. The sky was turning darker, and a thin layer of snow had settled on the frosty sidewalks. The queue was already long inside the entrance hall, and they joined the end, desperately hoping for no more setbacks. At half-past four the crowd moved forward, and they were in.

Ben checked a map he had downloaded on his phone and pointed to the left. They sped past exhibits of all shapes and sizes of animals, from bugs to a skeleton of a dodo. Millie caught sight of a hall with a ginormous model of a blue whale. She wandered towards it in awe until Ben and Laney pulled her away.

They passed a forest area displayed behind glass windows and the giant trunk of a sequoia tree, followed by more landscapes. Next came a hallway with a tall, colourful Christmas tree. Laney stopped for a moment to catch her breath. She noticed that every part of the tree was made of animals folded in paper.

She had an origami book at home that somebody had given her dad at work, and he had shared it with her. It was Ben and Millie’s turn to hurry her along into a hall filled with primates and early human history. “It’s the next room,” said Ben. The Arthur Ross Hall of Meteorites was not as busy as the other rooms, with only a couple of people looking around the exhibits.

Kris’ rock was displayed in a small glass cabinet in a darker corner of the room. “What are we gonna do, smash the glass?” Millie reached inside her bag to grab the kaleidoscope to use as a weapon. “No.” Laney pictured alarms going off and being chased down by security. “Haven’t we got anything magical to help us?” “Yeah,” Millie waved her kaleidoscope.

“I’ll smash it.” “Hold on—” Laney put a hand out as a thought occurred to her. Frosty had said that every magical object from the shop could be useful. She pulled the icicle keyring out from her pocket. She had already attached her apartment key to it. Ben read her thoughts, but said nothing as the other tourists shuffled over to look at Kris’ rock. They waited for what felt like an age for the pair to read the description and pose for selfies next to the artefact.

Finally, the tourists moved on, and Laney pushed her key towards the cabinet lock, her hands trembling. With a few sparks of light, the key changed shape as it touched the lock, and the glass swung open. Laney winced, waiting for the trill of an alarm that did not come. Perhaps the magic had disabled it. “Quick, leg it!” cried Millie, heading back. But Laney did not follow and crouched on the floor.

It can be seen in several spots across the town, and in one blurry video appears to be crashing at speed. Two residents commented that they felt a small earthquake, although no seismic activity has been recorded. Police have said that the object is most likely to have been a drone and have issued a warning to follow legal guidelines while operating unmanned vehicles. For Laney, it all started with the pencils. Laney rolled her green eyes as Connor threw another scrunched- up Christmas card at the boy at the front of the class. “Stop it,” she hissed. “You’re not funny.” Mr Sharma turned from a complicated sum on the whiteboard that nobody else was following. “No talking, Laney.” Connor smirked. “Yeah, no talking, Red.” He used this nickname not for Laney’s long brown hair but for her bright red coat, currently hung over the back of her chair.

He ripped another card from the wall at his side. Two seconds later, a crumpled arctic fox struck the back of Ben Hannigan’s head. The boy flinched but did not turn around. Connor yanked away a third card, decorated with a picture of a giant, glittery penguin.
