Language Of The Heart – Noel Cooper

The Gospel of John describes a Pharisee named Nicodemus who sought enlightenment from Jesus, defended him from attacks by religious authorities and, loyal even after Jesus’ execution, participated in his burial. Paul, who also adhered to the Pharisees’ point of view, became a Christian and a great early missionary. The Sadducees Most priests were Sadducees, a much more conservative school than the Pharisees.
They refused to accept any teaching that was not in Torah, even if it was found in the prophets or other scriptural writings. For example, they considered the belief in a future resurrection of the dead to be an unacceptable teaching. Many Jews, including Pharisees (and Jesus), had accepted this belief, which had become popular only in the previous few centuries (and therefore was not found in Torah). The Essenes The Essenes, a sect within the Jewish community, were devout and faithful people who abhorred the compromises that most people made in their social and political lives and tried to live with integrity under near-monastic conditions.
At times they were given to ferocious self-righteousness, calling on God to bring victory to their cause and destruction to the compromisers. The preaching of John the Baptist may have been influenced __by Essene thought. Qumran, which is perched on a plateau overlooking the Dead Sea, was probably an Essene community. That 150-year-old village was demolished during the uprising of 70 ce, but not before the inhabitants had hidden-their treasured “library in caves in the nearby cliffs.
Almost 2,000 years later, in 1947, a shepherd boy discovered what became known as the Dead. Sea scrolls. As a result of that discovery, we are able to read, in Hebrew, documents that people were reading when Jesus was alive. The Zealots The Zealots were a revolutionary political faction that called for armed rebellion against the Roman occupying force. They were responsible for repeated uprisings, and eventually for the protracted rebellion in the late 60s ce, which led to the destruction of Jerusalem and the eviction of the Jewish people from Palestine.
One of Jesus’ inner circle of twelve was known as Simon the Zealot. His relationship with Levi the tax collector (who had collaborated with the Romans to earn his daily bread) must have been carefully monitored.
