Law Of Beasts – Aalis Blue (1)

The war that eventually led to the end of Emeris and, eventually, Veres. Massive stone figures, some half-submerged in the mossy marsh, others lying cracked and slumped against mountainsides, lined the overgrown valley like slumbering titans. Their features were worn by centuries of wind and water, vines winding up their limbs and across their shattered helms. Some were missing limbs entirely; others lay buried beneath the soil as though the world had swallowed them in mourning.
‘Harbingers really shook the world at its foundations,’ Zarek thought to himself, the air cold, but his dragonfly scale armour kept him warm despite missing his shirt. The second war of Ferals was famously devastating, and the only footprints left behind were the giant rocks littered across the valley. He exhaled quietly, boots crunching over tangled roots and wet grass. Hadassah would’ve climbed one of the giants already if she were there with him. The thought almost eased his anxiety. She would’ve scampered up the elbow of some collapsed colossus just to read the carvings in its wrist, carvings he now recognised as Emerian.
She’d trace each faded rune with her fingers and tell him what it meant, even if she had to guess. Chapter 15 Zarek made his way up a toppled hand, palm up, fingers curled as if still grasping for something. Water pooled in its palm like an offering bowl. “You would’ve said Arcadia made them,” he muttered to himself. His chest ached. The silence was too heavy. For the past twenty-one years, Zarek hadn’t once spent a moment alone.
Then he had to wait for Hadassah to wake up for three months in Valdemar, now this. Though he spent most of his time in the Fae King’s domain, training under his fearsome wife, so he supposed he wasn’t truly alone. He hated to admit it, but the silence was near crippling. It helped to imagine Hadassah standing with him, at least until he could retrieve her.
Knowing her, she was probably still alive, but the simmering anxiety to return to her wasn’t easy to ignore. The only problem was, the entrance to the underworld was hidden by the Ferals, and so the only way in was to find a Feral to kidnap or escort him in. The wind pulled at his locs as he reached the open palm.
Only from that vantage point could he see something in the distance. Three swords. Impossibly tall black-silver blades stabbed into a far-off hill. Gold hilts glinted in the grey light. They looked identical, symmetrical down to the etching. But Zarek’s eyes knew better. Who didn’t know of the three swords of Emeris? Crafted by Leon the Great. Hadassah’s father. Her impossible, unreachable father, who had shaped not just artefacts, but fates.

The characters within this story often navigate morally ambiguous paths, and many of them suffer brutal, unjust fates. Throughout the novel, readers will encounter graphic depictions of violence, psychological trauma, themes of captivity, themes of forced pregnancy and termination, as well as the dehumanising effects of the ‘Law of Beasts’, also known as ‘Divine Law’. There is graphic torture, body horror and imprisonment. References to reproductive coercion, pregnancy, forced abortion, child trafficking and child abuse.
There are verbal threats of sexual violence—no graphic depiction—as well as systemic oppression, execution without trial, and corruption disguised as justice.
