He said he’d be back by lunch and it’s almost dinner time and my mom’s sick with worry!” “Does she know you came out here to get our help?” I questioned him. Rouan shrank beneath my inquiry and bit his lower lip. “Well, not really. . .” “Do you think that’s going to make her feel any better not knowing where you are?” I pointed out. “No, but I had to do something and you guys are our best chance!”

he insisted as he tried to hop up and down in my grasp. “If you and Dadan can’t find him, then nobody can!” “Are you even sure he’s missing?” I countered as I eased him off me and stood. He frowned and stamped a foot on the ground. “Of course I am! He’s never broken his word before! Something’s happened to him and you have to find him before, well, before something else happens!”

“Do you have any clues to his whereabouts?” The voice came from behind me. Rouan looked past me and I half-turned to find Dadan standing a few feet away. The young hare stabbed a finger at the woods. “He said he was going to look for the trouble in there. That’s all I know.” “So no more than what he told us when we met him?” I guessed. His shoulders sagged and he hung his head. “No. . .” “We will search the woods for your friend,” Dadan promised as he strode past us and to the edge of the hill.

I lifted an eyebrow and hurried up to this side. “But how can we find him in this much forest and with him having a head start of several hours?” Dadan lifted his hand and a teardrop-shaped fireball burst out of his palm. “Like this.” He blew on the fire and sparks flew out.

The glistening droplets of fire shot into the abyss over the forest and twisted about in a frenzied dance. Dadan waved his hand and it was like a windstorm. The sparks scattered to the four corners of the large valley, their tiny bodies becoming little more than fireflies as they flitted through the trees. Rouan gaped at the magic before he lifted his wide eyes to Dadan.

“What can’t you do?” Dadan lifted his chin but I detected a hint of pleasure in his eyes. “A great deal. Let us hope I do not fail in finding your friend.

It was a perfect day in the heaven realm. That’s why it had to be ruined. I sat on one of the benches scattered around my modest palace with my hands in my lap and a smile on my face.

The high sun warmed my cheeks and tried to tan their unhealthy pallor. I raised one hand and turned it over. The muscles were still stiff and sore even after three long weeks of recuperating. “Does it still hurt?” I jumped and whipped my head to my right. Arian stood there with two cups in her hand and a worried look on her face.

I dropped my hand into my lap and shrugged. “A little.” “You would not give your hands so much attention for a little pain,” Arian countered as she took a seat beside me and held out the steaming cup of tea. I gladly accepted the cup and clasped it between both hands. “I’m fine, really.” She nodded down at my cup. “Then why are you using the warm tea to soothe the soreness in your hands?” My face fell and I looked at my hands.

The heat had indeed unconsciously tempted me to dampen the ache. I sighed and my shoulders drooped. “I guess it does bother me-” “More than a little,” she finished for me. “More than a little,” I repeated with a faint smile. “Anyway, I’m sure I’ll be better in a week or two.
