Perhaps that was what he made her. Perhaps that was a good thing. She had been reborn in fire and death and betrayal. She was no longer the meek girl he used to know. His passive, naive niece was gone. The woman stalking towards him was someone new entirely. Without waiting for him to catch his breath, Deming leapt into action.

She spun and ducked his incoming fist, then advanced. He was taller and stronger but she was quicker and full of vengeful rage. The tunnel collapsed and sounds faded away as all her focus turned to finishing this, finishing him. He landed a punch on her shoulder. She absorbed the blow and retaliated, jabbing him quickly in the stomach, then the wrist, then the neck. While he was choking on air she paused, breathed, then spun forward like a whirlwind. Deming had never been more thankful for the hours spent training than she did the moment her foot kicked hard into his thigh and he tumbled to the ground, his head hitting the stone floor with a crack.

Her body was on top of his before she could register her own movements. She threw all her weight behind her closed fist and swore expletives at the bloodied face below her as her knuckles smashed into his nose. It broke with a satisfying crack. Dresden’s chest rose and fell erratically. So much blood was smeared across his puffed and agitated skin that he hardly looked human. Ironic. Deming cocked her head.

She was the one who could no longer claim to be human and yet here her uncle was, laying in his own sweat and blood because of the inhuman actions he chose to take. She may be a mage, but she was more human than he. She raised her hand again. Anger coursed through her like lightning. Fast and impatient and blinding— “Enough.” That voice. She hadn’t heard it in years. Deming’s fist froze inches from her uncle’s brow. Nothing save for the shock of that familiar voice ringing in her ears could have drawn her from the frenzy she had whipped herself into.

Her heart stuttered to a stop. He was here. Khalil.
