I knew what was coming. “This is your final chance,” he said from a distance. A jolt of electricity blasted me, my body shook. So much pain. They pulled the contacts away just before I’d have gone into cardiac arrest, waited a few seconds, and hit me again just for spite. I screamed. “Fedorov is in Zürich,” I said. The words erupted from my mouth so fast, they came out practically as one.

“So, not New York, then? Why is he in Zürich?” Between heaving gasps for air, I said, “Because he thought he’d be safe there.” A pause, to collect my thoughts. Had to sell this. He already thought the CIA was involved. “Plan was to bring him…to New York. But it was too risky.”

I stopped again to breathe. “Where in Zürich is he?” “Park Hyatt, but he’s gone by now. I told him to change hotels every two, three days. Stay in American-owned properties as much as possible.” He’d know if I gave him an exact location, I was lying. The Russian officer feigned a look of grim concern. “Honestly, I’m disappointed in you, Matthew. I hadn’t expected you to give Fedorov up. People really are disposable to you, aren’t they?” What. A. Bastard. The Russians were desperate for this information to stay hidden and were going to some extraordinary lengths to keep it that way.

Which only made my failure so much worse. Hopefully, I’d bought Denis and Luc, my pal in Belgium’s security service, some time. There would be no trial in Moscow, that much was certain. I also doubted there would be something as sublime as a Siberian work camp. There would only be an unnamed cell beneath the Lubyanka, the infamous former KGB headquarters where the FSB invented crimes against the state and tortured and murdered people pronounced guilty of them.

“I look forward to seeing you in Moscow, Mr. Gage. Since your country has restricted flights to my country, you will be traveling by boat. Assuming you make it. I understand the seas can be…unpredictable…this time of year.” The interrogator jutted his chin in a kind of nod to someone unseen, and they ripped me out of my restraints. Bolstered by a man on either side, they zip-tied my hands and dragged me out of the room.

By “office,” I mean the Santa Monica tiki bar where I conduct most of my affairs. I’d just abandoned a case when I’d realized what the client was really after was some light industrial espionage packaged as research for a wrongful termination suit.

I figured out what was going on before I’d broken any laws, but the client didn’t appreciate when I’d called him out, and now I wasn’t getting paid.
