The old woman walked toward her like a helpless child, feeling her fear, the beautiful, horrifying fear. “Help…” the old woman said in a strained voice, her eyes watering with tears yet her body frozen by Lilith’s command. Before she had time to think of what to do with this poor soul, she sensed the running desire—the hunger, edged with such need it felt insatiable.

She shivered. Famine was here. “Let me help you,” Lilith offered soothingly. She felt the cannibals before she saw them. Like a murder of crows, they raced past her, straight toward the transfixed old woman. She moaned and cried, but her jaw was frozen, just like the rest of her body. The group of cannibals jumped and sprang forth onto the weathered meat bag, ripping and biting. Clawing at her thin skin and moaning in their feverish pleasure as though they were eating a delicious hamburger, not a human.

She knew that Famine’s cannibals wouldn’t bother her. In fact… She snapped her fingers at the closest cannibal, who had one of the old woman’s toes dangling from its wet, bloodied lips. She noticed that the cannibal’s belly was protruding from his lean and gangly body.

His death would come soon. His stomach would be bursting any minute now. Unexpectedly, he licked his lips and finished the rest of the toe on his lips, yet continued to stand before her like a docile puppy. This teen boy was an empty, vacant shell, filled with only one need—hunger. His soul felt contaminated somehow. It felt unnatural, even to her and all her power. The Horseman had stripped their identities from them, creating an army of lethal, hungry puppets.

“Follow,” she instructed, and the cannibal obeyed, trailing behind her like an armed cannon she could let loose on anyone. Famine’s cannibals were attempting to get inside the unburnt houses, beating on the windows and the door, screaming in their frustration. The door to one of those houses was flung open. A teen girl appeared and began running toward Lilith, tears and blood streaking her pretty face.

“Help me!” she pleaded. “Sure,” Lilith said. “How about we go fishing?” “What?” The girl blinked, staring at her, confused. Lilith stepped toward her, feeling the girl’s fear like a sweet, intoxicating morsel, dripping wet and needing to be devoured.
