A chance that required Becca, the real Becca, to be hurt. Beaten. With Devin’s own hands. In the distance, a bird cried, lonely and shrill. “No,” Devin said, so quietly it was almost inaudible.

The dream Becca stiffened against him. “Devin…” “No,” he repeated, louder this time. “I understand—we can’t stop him. We have to let him hurt her. But I want to be there. Even if I’m helpless. Even if all I can do is watch.” She turned her face up to look at him. “But why?” “Because it matters,” he said, struggling for words. “She shouldn’t be alone. I should be with her, even if she doesn’t know I’m there.

Do you understand?” She shook her head, the smallest of motions. “It’s too much risk.” Gently, Devin held her at arm’s length. He saw it now, how she differed from the real Becca. Maybe it was the influence of Devin’s own mind; he didn’t know. But fear weighed on this Becca like steel around her neck.

The Becca Devin had fallen in love with was different. She lived for breakneck speeds and death-defying heights. Danger fuelled her; fear made her move and fight and reach for the stars. “The risk,” he told the dream aspect of Becca, “is exactly why I have to go back.” “I don’t understand.” “You said it yourself—breaking free of Bertram, it’s nearly impossible.
