I take it, dragging deep even though I rarely smoke, and when the head rush hits me, I moan and let myself slump even more, the tension in my shoulders bleeding out. “I think you’re all kinds of messed up in the head over everything that’s happened, and as usual, what you’re doing instead of confronting it is running away.

Tell me this, though, brother, if you don’t confront it and find a way to handle this mess, are you ready to see Bri walk away? I grunt, not liking the idea at all. She belongs with me. Angel and Ginny are mine. “You don’t like that, do you? Even if it means you’d get your freedom back?” he asks softly, hitting on a truth that makes me swallow. I shift uncomfortably, unable to answer any of this because I don’t know what to say.

The thought of Angel leaving me and going on to live her own life guts me, but I can’t deny that little niggle of discomfort I feel when I think of a life with her. It would entail monogamy because Angel is not the kind of woman to accept it if I stick my dick in other women.

I’d have to build us a house, think about more than just my wants and needs, and I’d have to be home every night, playing the part of the good guy when deep down I’ve always known there is no good in me. I was born with a darkness inside of me that has no place touching anything as pure as Brianna and Ginny, and I fucking know it. But letting them go? My blood boils just thinking about my angel finding someone else one day.

Getting married. Having his babies. Raising our kid with this prick. “I don’t know what I want, Texas,” I finally admit, scrubbing at my neck and grunting when Gunner comes out holding three beers, his blue eyes sharp and steady as he takes me in and shakes his head with a hiss of disdain. “You’re an idiot.” “I know,” I grunt, drinking deeply before I look over at the cabin and tilt of my head.
