Of course, after I finished, he would usually reply with a snide, undermining comment. My grip tightened on the damp pair of trousers in my hand. Where’s this polite, charming Tristan when I’m around? “I mean, no one has ever asked me what kind of husband I’d like. I never voiced my dreams aloud until Tristan sounded me out.” The color in her cheeks deepened to an almost reddish hue. “Father hasn’t bothered to inquire, and I know I must marry whomever he chooses, but it’s nice to hope.”

“Father spoke of his intention to see you wed?” Nessa nodded, reaching the end of the clothesline, and lifted the basket of clean, folded linen to her hip. “Isn’t it strange that it was after Tristan asked me what type of man I wish to marry?” She chuckled. “Father tells me I’ll meet King Ferdiad’s son, Brian, soon and we may be betrothed?” “Strange indeed,” I say more to myself than Nessa as we walk back to the village. Guilt crashed through me. I had always wanted someone kind and protective to marry my sister.

I had never considered what kind of man she would like to wed. And the man whom I couldn’t stand most in the world was the only person who bothered to ask. Two days later, after finding a bouquet of yellow flowers on my doorstep, my skin crawled with agitation. Even when Tristan offered a change of scenery and we walked along the rocky cliffside overlooking the churning ocean, the salty air didn’t provide its usual comfort. “You’re uncharacteristically quiet today,” Tristan commented, ripping off a piece of bread from a loaf and offering it to me.

“No, I’m not,” I said stiffly, taking the portion and tearing off a bite of crust with my teeth.
