Lovelorn – Alysha Everwood

Peter’s eyes fill with worry. “Quiet!” I raise my hand, and he immediately falls silent. I inch closer to him, like a predator to prey, anger lit in my eyes. “You are a skeeving, conniving little—” “ASSHOLE!” Dionysus shouts from behind me, and I close my eyes for a moment, exhaling a steady breath. “Excuse him, he gets a little passionate,” I tap a finger to my chin as if in thought.
“But I do like that word.” “What’s going on?” I stiffen when I hear Alora’s voice, turning to see her concerned face as she stands in the archway. “Uh-oh.” Dionysus mumbles out, taking a large swig of wine. “Alora—” Peter starts, but I don’t let him finish. “You!” I point an angry finger at him. “Quiet! Your mouth will never speak her name again.” “Alora, my love, we’re leaving.”
I walk over to her, extending my arm out, and a small sigh of relief escapes me when she grabs it without hesitation, and I lead us out. “Wait, what happened in there?” She whirls around when she hears a shout to see Dionysus running wobbly down the steps with laughter, a very wet Peter standing in the doorway as dark purple liquid runs down his face, staining his perfectly white shirt. “What is going on?” She stares wide eyed at the chaotic scene.
“Let’s get out of here first, and I’ll explain.” OceanofPDF.com try to fight the tears that well in my eyes, taking a deep breath as I turn to face the garden as Eros explains what he overheard at the estate. “Alora, I’m so sorry!” “It’s not your fault.” I sniffle, trying to keep my tears at bay.
“Did… did I even have a chance?” I hate the desperation that drips from my voice. Eros steps up beside me, his gaze sympathetic. “Yes, he did find you interesting, but alas, he was a downright buffoon.” I chuckle a bit at that. “But I should’ve sensed his motives earlier.” I sigh, feeling foolish for having gotten caught up in such a man.
He just seemed so charming.

OceanofPDF.com L Prologue ove. Everyone desires it, but not all find it. Sometimes it is something chosen, and other times it’s an out-of-control fire, burning hot through one’s veins, eating through all logic and rationality. They say love can hurt, but what they don’t tell you is what can twist your heart even more, is never being loved. It has never chosen me despite me putting my heart out there just to be scorned.
Desire and lust are one thing, and that can be received and given without love ever being present. But I want the yearning, the pining, the feather light brush of knuckles against the soft flesh of my cheek, the tangle of fingers before a kiss brushes over skin, the talks that fade into the night under a moonlit sky. I want to be known, to be seen, to be accepted for all I am and all that I am not.
But some ancestor of mine decided to muck things up with Aphrodite, and yes, I mean the goddess, so now I’m stuck to suffer a curse of unrequited love. But does that keep me from attempting to find someone who can love me? No, but it does make me an idiot who thinks true love can break a centuries long curse. OceanofPDF.com I 1 promised myself I wouldn’t cry this time. But inevitably, the tears welled up, pouring from my eyes like summer rain, hot and sticky on my cheeks, which were already red from rejection.
“You’re wonderful, truly. You have a lovely personality; you’re funny, smart, kind, and not horrible to look at.” Gregory looked at me with a patronizing gaze, and my brows furrowed at the compliment, or insult rather. I know I’m not the most confident woman, but my looks aren’t atrocious.
