\u201cDarenna, this is Liam, Liam, this is Darenna,\u201d Chappell said as he gave her a hug. \u201cNice to meet you,\u201d I said and stuck out my hand for her to shake it. She looked me up and down and I noticed Chappell frown. The frown quickly turned into a large grin as Darenna shook my hand. She sat down and took a look at Chappell and started blushing.<\/p>\n

I took my seat followed by Chappell. \u201cIt\u2019s just you this time?\u201d Chappell asked. \u201cNone of them want to come to a place like this,\u201d Darenna said and gave a shy smile. \u201cToo many families and older people here. They would kick them out in a heartbeat. They also don’t serve ale.\u201d \u201cWell I am happy you came. How was work?\u201d \u201cIt was work,\u201d Darenna said hesitantly. \u201cI don’t look down on you for being a laborer,\u201d Chappell said and grabbed her hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou shouldn’t look down on yourself either.\u201d \u201cWe just come from two different worlds,\u201d Darenna said. \u201cI keep wondering how I haven’t messed the bed yet. I really wish I could introduce you to my family but I am a bit embarrassed by them.\u201d \u201cDon’t be and I can meet them whenever you want,\u201d Chappell said. \u201cI don’t know what I did to deserve you, but thank you,\u201d Darenna said and then gave a puzzled look.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think someone over there knows one of you.\u201d I turned to see Caley Boston out with her entire family. I smiled, stood up and made my way over. Caley gave me a smile and started the introductions. \u201cAnd here is the young man that replaced Rista.\u201d \u201cNice to meet you all in person,\u201d I smiled. \u201cYou must be Miss Heather, I would shake hands but you know how that goes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA charmer,\u201d Heather said and gave a little laugh. \u201cAnd you must be Mr. Herman.\u201d \u201cAlright, I like this one a lot better than Rista,\u201d Herman laughed. \u201cAnd that is saying a lot that I would rather have some young beautiful man work with my wife instead of a woman. How are you liking it here so far?\u201d \u201cEverything just went so fast, Sir.<\/p>\n

A month or so ago I was living with my father high up in the mountains. He knew I was going to be fire and didn’t want me burning anything down. I was never really around a lot of people, just near a small mining town.<\/p>\n

Now I am in this big city and lucked into getting a job that I wouldn’t have given a mountain boy. I even made a friend, I am over there meeting his date right now.\u201d \u201cBoth of you aren’t exclusively into Mages?\u201d Herman asked.<\/p>\n

I woke up early, feeling restless and anxious about the journey ahead. As a Fire Mage, one of the rarest types, I was part of a select group. Mages came in six varieties: Fire, Water, Air, Earth, Body, and Mind. Body Mages, who discovered the magical genes, were predominantly female. Among those without magical energy, the ratio was five females to every male.<\/p>\n

However, in the Mage community, females outnumbered males by a ratio of fifteen to one. Fire Mages were particularly scarce because they were often on the front lines during conflicts. The destructive nature of fire meant it had few practical uses outside of battle, and Fire Mages from different Kingdoms often clashed, further reducing their numbers. A Mage’s affinity usually depended on the mother, so the absence of Fire Mage mothers led to fewer Fire Mages being born.<\/p>\n

My own mother died during childbirth; she was severely injured while pregnant with me. My father was a Water Mage, and due to my mother\u2019s condition, I ended up with a mutation. \u200bMutations in magic are rare but not unheard of. Most Fire Mages could cast actual fire and get it to do amazing things. I do not have this ability, I cannot make flame appear from nowhere or control fire that is already present.<\/p>\n

I can control temperature. I can cause things to catch fire but temperature is what I have. I can increase the temperature of an object by taking away the heat in the environment and infusing it into an object or person. In the case of a candle, I can take the ambient room temperature and cram it into a much smaller area, like a candle wick. It would cause the point that I am infusing to go up in temperature rapidly until whatever it is, is hot enough to catch fire.<\/p>\n

I am a mutated Fire Mage and the trip ahead of me is so I can be counted. \u200bAll Fire Mages have to present themselves to the government in the Republic of Atan.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
