Perhaps you will be the one to amend what has lain untouched for so long.\u201d Kara\u2019s hands curled into fists. \u201cNot if I\u2019m dead, I won\u2019t!\u201d \u201cFather, I have an idea.\u201d Ivonne broke into the heated discussion with a softer tone. \u201cWhat is it, little leaf?\u201d \u201cI will go.\u201d Kara blinked.<\/p>\n

Tears brimmed in her eyes, and she swiped them away with the back of her hand. \u201cWhat?\u201d \u201cI\u2019ll go,\u201d Ivonne repeated. This time, she grinned, and her solemnity evaporated into the mist. \u201cI\u2019ll come with you, and I\u2019ll help. A full-grown fey is worth at least half a dozen fighters. Athemis won\u2019t know what hit them.\u201d Hollow Tree grumbled wordlessly, but the tenor was thoughtful rather than discontented.<\/p>\n

Eventually, he muttered, \u201cThere is no clause prohibiting a fey creature from joining a Judge\u2019s Circle. It has simply not been done in over seven hundred years.\u201d \u201cHigh time we got back into practice, then.\u201d Ivonne dusted her hands off\u2014figuratively, Kara supposed, since they were still dripping\u2014and stood on the water\u2019s surface. \u201cCome on, then! Bring me home!\u201d Kara stared at her. \u201cI don\u2019t want to sound ungrateful, but\u2026you\u2019re gonna stand out. You\u2019re green.\u201d Ivonne laughed. \u201cOh, that\u2019s easy to change.<\/p>\n

Humans see what we want them to see. Don\u2019t worry about that. It\u2019ll be fine!\u201d \u201cIf you say so,\u201d Kara murmured. \u201cI do say so,\u201d Ivonne firmly stated. \u201cNow, you\u2019d best thank Father properly or else the magic will get antsy, and nobody likes antsy magic.\u201d \u201cDefinitely not,\u201d Kara agreed. She had no idea what \u201cantsy magic\u201d entailed, but she suspected she wouldn\u2019t like it. She tore her eyes off the voluptuous green beauty still standing on the surface of the pool and focused on the giant floating log who was apparently her boss.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Vehmic Court extends its deepest gratitude to the Court of Fog and Grove for its hospitality and its generous offer of assistance in the Vehmic Court\u2019s time of need. \u201cThe Court of Fog and Grove renews its vow of alliance and support to the Vehmic Court,\u201d Hollow Tree replied. \u201cMay your justice be swift and true. Until we meet again.\u201d \u201cUntil we meet again,\u201d Kara echoed, but the grove was already gone. She stood at the edge of the forest, fifty yards from her rental car.<\/p>\n

Her permanent address remained in the Central NorMetro area of North Texas Mega-Metroplex, formerly known as Dallas, so the population density was a familiar constant. The architecture that formed the backdrop of her daily life had shifted significantly. Part of her missed NorMetro\u2019s open blue skies and dusty streets, but she was becoming accustomed to NLA\u2019s Japanese-influenced skyscrapers. She couldn\u2019t say she loved the ubiquitous, flashing neon advertising of the animated billboards covering the fa\u00e7ades of those skyscrapers.<\/p>\n
