We just picked whichever one felt right, and eventually came to The Door.\u201d \u201cThe Door?\u201d \u201cThe Door.\u201d Furbo\u2019s face took on a wondrous expression. \u201cOh, my boy, now that is a Door. Would you like me to tell you about it?\u201d \u201cUh, briefly, please, Furbo, sticking to the size and overall nature of the carvings.\u201d Felix had heard about this door a lot in the past few weeks. When Furbo was in the mood, he could talk about it for literally hours.<\/p>\n

He had, once. Felix wanted to hear it all, just in case some part of it was relevant. None of it was. \u201cWell, it was large, around as big as the door to this hall. Pure black stone, hinged, and covered top to bottom in all manner of carvings, from animals, women, monsters, demons\u2014\u201d \u201cThank you, witness. Was the door locked?\u201d Furbo was only slightly deflated upon being stopped, but Felix had warned him that would happen.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot really, Felix.\u201d \u201cNot really? Can you elaborate?\u201d \u201cWell, there was no key, no lock as such. There was a handle within easy reach, and Helda turned it, and the door opened.\u201d \u201cWas there any indication on the door that you should not open it?\u201d \u201cNo, nothing.\u201d \u201cObjection,\u201d said Ettyson. \u201cWas there any sign insinuating you could or should open it?\u201d Felix was surprised at this. He had expected better from his counterpart. Furbo gave the response that had been drilled into him by the defence team, on the \u2018just in case\u2019 practice sessions.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, prosecutor, but surely a door without a warning or \u2018no entry\u2019 sign is an invitation in itself? One does not build a door where one intended a wall.\u201d Ettyson worked her jaw, then sat down. Felix clasped his hands together, steepling his fingers in a thoughtful expression.<\/p>\n

\u201cWitness, what did you find behind the door?\u201d he said. \u201cRacelsus.\u201d A few murmurs from the crowd. \u201cAnd what happened then?\u201d \u201cWe chatted.\u201d More murmurs. \u201cWhat about?\u201d \u201cOh, you know.<\/p>\n

He darted his eyes to the person in the defendant\u2019s chair, an enormous figure in black-iron armour, whose very posture dripped with malice. What wasn\u2019t covered with terrifying runes promising untold torment was dotted with spikes, curved and horrifying, or festooned with nightmarish trinkets, skulls and fetishes. Felix gestured with his free hand, miming lifting something from his face. His client made to raise an arm, and the seven wizards that maintained the crackling cage of power that restrained him winced.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
