My eyes widen and I don\u2019t even blink. He wants me to go home with him. Stay with him in one house. See how he is in his home environment. Me! For my safety. \u201cHome with you?\u201d I whisper, hoping he doesn\u2019t hear me, but I should have known better. Mateo hears and sees everything. \u201cYes, I have an extra room on one side of the house. You will have total privacy as well as protection.\u201d He winks at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen again, at Bently\u2019s, you will have all the cowboys and the cutest little boy.\u201d I laugh as he wiggles his eyebrows. \u201cI can\u2019t say no to that.\u201d I tease. I\u2019ve never been this vocal with a guy before. I\u2019m not the fun outgoing type and never talk to any guy like this. I\u2019ve never felt this comfortable with anyone like I am with him. He shakes his head as he smiles. \u201cWhere do you want to stay for the time being?\u201d I look down at my hand. Bently should be my only choice.<\/p>\n

I know her better, but the thought of Mateo there to protect me sounds like heaven. Every time I\u2019ve seen him he has been sweet and kind, but I know he has also been observing. He is sure to have seen all my bruises or even the times I was a little insecure while working. He was there all the time. My mind goes back to the beautiful blonde that he had dinner with.<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t live with him and his girlfriend. Even if he is only doing this because of his work. \u201cI don\u2019t want to get you into trouble with your girlfriend so\u2013\u201d \u201cWait, what?\u201d He interrupts me. \u201cThe blonde you had dinner with last night,\u201d I reply as my cheeks heat up. He laughs and I try to hide my face in his hands but he holds on to them. \u201cThat\u2019s my sister, Marley. She lives with me.\u201d He chuckles a little more as I look at him dumbfounded.<\/p>\n

Now that he mentions it, they do look a lot alike. I feel so stupid for thinking it\u2019s his girlfriend. \u201cYou two are a lot alike and she wants to help however she can.\u201d \u201cOkay, I\u2019ll go home with you until everything has been sorted out,\u201d I reply. \u201cGreat. I\u2019ll phone Marley and make the arrangements. First, I need to take you down to the station so we can take a formal statement. Brandon has your father in the holding cells, but he won\u2019t see you at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

His smile reassures me that I\u2019m safe. Maybe it\u2019s time for me to open up about what has happened at my house. Perhaps they will explain to me why parents treat their kids like that. \u201cI just want to use the bathroom before we leave.\u201d Mateo nods as he pulls out his phone.<\/p>\n
